obama said something to the effect of he used to wear the flag pin but stopped when it started being used for fear mongering and rallying people for war.
he said he was taught as a child to stand with hands down during anthem.
by the way Im not proud of the this country either, considering whats happened in the past few decades.
(I work with a bunch of doctors...it's amazing how many of them I hear talking about how they don't like Obama's connections with Jihad terrorist. I just stay silent because Im a minority in not believing it...another thing they always talk about is how they're not going to fall for the GW hoax)
Ron Paul for president !

I'm not happy with a lot of the actions of the current US Government as a whole. It's way too big, way too wasteful, and has its ineffective tentacles in far too many things it was never charged with. We don't need more politicians that spend all their time looking for ways to grow the behemoth even more. And yes, the Bush administration gets an F- for much of what it's done on the overspending and big government front too.

I think Buckaroo is right. For the same reason you need flairs to work at Chotchkies, you should wear a pin to be the President.

Perhaps it's just me, but I see anyone going through the effort of a political race as "patriotic". Republican politicians care so much about their country that they want to keep it just as it is. Democratic politicians care so much about their country that they want to make it even better.
All this "OH NO! He didn't put his hand over his heart" or "He only cares enough to put his hand over his groin" or "he's not wearing any pins!!!" is just a bunch of nonsense.

No.
It could be at the end and he's already dropped his hand down and the others have not yet, or it could be some other countries national anthem and the other two guys are doing what they would normally do out of instinct, and Bush new better. You don't really know what is going on here.

In which case, if he were a politician you didn't like, you'd probably say he wasn't being as patriotic as everybody else by putting his hands behind his back as soon as possible.

I actually sing the National Anthem - it's not supposed to be a performance, it's supposed to be something everyone can do.
That sporting events have turned it into a performance as less and less people feel comfortable joining in is a side-effect, and should not be intentional.
I will always sing the National Anthem.
I sing it almost every morning at 9am.

What if this is more the result of Obama not doing an effective enough job of taking his message to the good people of Tennessee who fed this journalist? Should the non-god do something about his followers at an anti-Iraq war rally who can't locate Iraq on a map? This rhetoric is not the product of religious following. It's the product of being ill informed.

Kids often parrot their parents. I found it refreshing that the child was so openly critical of Bush. Sure I wish there were more substance, but you should take some pleasure in knowing that this child will not follow someone contingent upon an (R) or (D). Someone this confident and eloquent (and opinionated) will hopefully maintain her zeal and learn both sides of these stories. You should hear the retarded nonsense coming from kids parroting their parents on global warming.

How is that refreshing when it's essentially the cultural norm?

I'd start by throwing in what I said in the first place; "... this child will not follow someone contingent upon an (R) or (D). Someone this confident and eloquent (and opinionated) will hopefully maintain her zeal and learn both sides of these stories."
I'd add that she seems aware that people can claim one thing, yet produce another. The girl seemed generally opposed to our action in Iraq as well as the mother, but then the grandmother (I guess I'm assuming, the older lady) claimed Bush was protecting Israel and was pleased. There's clearly some differences in opinion in that household all the way down to the youngster. This is refreshing.

I wouldn't worry too much about Obama or Hillary...one thing is certain with USA, it still has a one track mind. I don't believe the good citizens, as a whole, will vote for a minority person as President. And women are included as a minority.

I never tire of it.

You mean you just sing it? You don't do it for work or anything like that? You just sing it because you love America so much?

There's a thread on here someplace about morning rituals. Someone here does "The Terminator" in the morning. He crouches down and sings the Terminator theme while slowly standing up.
So instead of that, he does the national anthem.

Sir, you're not up on your etiquette. The hand over heart is not for the anthem, but instead for the American flag. Commonly, there's a flag in the vicinity when the anthem is sung in a place like a campaign rally, sporting event, or so on. In my house, I don't have a flag. I did have one outside my front door, but I took it down because it was getting weathered, and it wasn't dignified. I retired it with respect.
