Comparison 800DVI to 1GHZ

800 DVI:
Xbench Version 1.0b2
System Version 10.2.2
Physical RAM 1024 MB
Processor PowerPC,G4@0 [800 MHz]
Drive IBM Travelstar 5400RPM 48GB

1GHZ:
Xbench Version 1.0b2
System Version 10.2.2
Physical RAM 1024 MB
Processor PowerPC,G4@0 [1000 MHz]
Drive Fujitsu 4200RPM 60GB (stock)

Test 800DVI 1GHZ Diff%

CPU 106.36 125.13 18%
Thread 80.05 86.34 8%
Memory 108.38 119.61 10%
Quartz 85.84 101.49 18%
UI 87.90 105.78 20%
Disk 31.88 43.59 37%

Combined 83.40 110.36 32%

All apps were quit (except finder) and Airport was shut off.

Screen brightness - Same
Noise level - 1GHZ runs fan more
Case - Appears identical (except for moniker)
Battery - 1GHZ gets 2:45 full performance. Better by 20 mins than 800DVI
Heat - 1GHZ is cooler

32% better overall... Not a bad upgrade!

Good info Karmin. Too bad Macs only couldn't figure out how to do their bogus "benchmark test" right.

That Fujitsu HD is impressive....

Yeah, now they're claiming the speed problem stems from "a software issue"

It's very possible that the new drives are limited by the firmware or software to single-speed burning.

With Toast 5.14 I confirmed the only choice is 1X writing to a DVD. It could be Toast drivers, firmware, software, or hardware. Maybe it is a current draw issue, or heat related.

Or maybe that's just the speed limit of the drive. I'm starting to think that the 2X burning spec on that Japanese website may just apply to the LF-D521 and sibling desktop drives.

Anyways, I'd rather have 1X DVD-R with 1X DVD-RAM than 2X DVD-R with no DVD-RAM.

I assume you're talking about that bogus 867 PB review posted on the net the other day?

EDIT: Answered my own question:

Reader Rick Thorpe is running Mac OS X 10.2.2 (Build 6F21) on his new 867 MHz PowerMac G4. He ran the Altivec Fractal benchmark and got 3.1 GFLOPS, some 35 per cent faster than we got running Mac OS X 10.2.1 (Build 6E62) on the same machine and some 11 per cent faster than our 800 MHz PowerBook G4. This result is consistent with our view that our speed test results stem from a software issue. We will be re-running our tests and will post the results in the near future.
Anyways, that was one of lamest reviews I've read in a long time.
