I am experiencing a problem where, when my battery is low, instead of going into sleep the computer abruptly turns off. The low battery warning does come up beforehand so it's not that the computer has wildly miscalculated the battery life. Has anyone else experienced this?

Your battery is either in very bad shape, or your PB needs to looked at by a Apple Care Specialist. Do you have access to a "good" battery to check and see what the culprit is? Good Luck...let us know what the problem was.

first i'd suggest resetting your power management unit:

1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Press the Power button to restart the computer.

then i'd recalibrate your battery by charging it full, then using your computer until the battery gets so low your computer goes to sleep.

Unfortunately I've already reset the PMU... twice actually. I've also reset the PRAM. Both of these were done because, inexplicably, the light on the power adapter stays green no matter whether the battery is fully charged or not.

I was trying to recalibrate the battery when I noticed this latest problem.

Mmmmmmm, my powerbook goes to sleep ok, but I never seem to get a warning that it is about to do so (running low etc)... But everything else seems to be fine...
