Hey guys, I was just posting about going to Cleveland and I just thought this would be cool.
Let's all meet and just hang out and enjoy seeing each other without having to look at the avatar's. I don't know if this has been tried on a small scale...but maybe we could me in Chicago or Dallas or somewhere centrally located.....so everyone can come out to it if they desired.
So who's in?? I am so wanting to meet more people and see new places. So who has ideas for where to meet? I am thinking more north or central US so that more people can make it.
If you have ideas of where to meet please state them.
If you want to come, please say so.
If you are going to come, please make that clear.
If there are others that you want to know that you want to meet them, be loud and proud.
We are thinking the first or second weekend in July or August

Who's we?
Maybe tattoo our sigs on our forehead? (we don't use avatars yo)
Why not Miami? (Police Academy finally came into it's own when it filmed from Miami, just sayin')
Nevermind Miami (July or August - do you wanna die? ::heat:: )
Nevermind the whole thing actually.

I'm not sure, but I think if you use the word "Shindig" you are legally obligated to have a screening of the show Firefly and convert at least 5 newbies to the cult of Whedon.

Shindig — dip, less mellow song stylings, perhaps a large amount of malt beverage. A hootenanny, well, it's chock full of hoot, just a little bit of nanny

If it is in NYC I am always interested in meeting people from the boards. There are a few people here I know, but many more I would like to meet.

I nearly went to Huntington last week to see Danger: Diabolik at a movie theater there. But it turned out to be too much of a hike for anyone to be interested.

Like this.
Where every sentence gets its own paragraph.
You know what I mean.
Maybe I said it wrong.
OK.
Never mind.

Are you in the area? I haven't been here that long (6 months) and I plan on moving to Plainview over the summer.

Oh from how he described it it sounded like I wrote paragraph long statements using only one sentence.
BTW I do that above because I like to separate my statements as to make it easier for ME to read.
I think it's even lamer to single someone out about such things and make an actual post about it.
But that is just me.
But I tell you what. Go into Feedback forum and make a complaint about it. They may make it a bannable offense.

Speaking of which, we're coming to end of January and Bannable Offense still hasn't returned. I wonder if he's actually still banned or has voluntarily given up.

I actually like it because it makes it easier to address different points of a post. Especially when they should have broken their post into different paragraphs and instead left it as one huge rambling paragraph.

Ahem. Back on the subject of a meeting place, am I right that the priority should be on being as accessible as possible to the greatest number of MacNN users?
Nashville, Dallas, and Chicago have the advantage of being relatively centrally located relative to the US. On average, US users would have an easier time getting to these places. Chicago would also be relatively easy for our Canadian users, while Dallas might be easier for users from Mexico and South America.
However, MacNN has a sizable international population, both in terms of posters and of lurkers. For them, central location relative to the US doesn't mean as much; of greater concern is being able to get there at all. San Francisco and New York would be best in these cases.
There's also the possibility of hosting a shindig outside the US, but this carries its own issues. While MacNN has a sizable international community, many of our users still come from the US: probably the largest proportion, in fact. Hosting within the US, therefore, is likely to make it easier for a larger number of people to attend.
Honestly, Chicago and Dallas seem to be the two best choices, if accessibility is the primary concern. They're centrally located within the US, and they have good air, rail, and road access. Ship access isn't so good in either location, but this doesn't sound likely to be a problem for our purposes. Both have international airports, and while their own reach isn't as good as it would be from San Francisco or New York, all four cities are well-connected to each other via air; getting connecting flights should be relatively easy.
Some lesser, but probably still significant, concerns: - Expense. Dallas and Chicago are not small cities, and neither would be terribly cheap. They are, however, likely to be significantly less expensive than either New York or San Francisco.
- Stuff to Do. You can't beat New York for stuff to do; you just can't. That said, the other cities are still large; there will be stuff. While the shindig itself would probably be the main draw for many of our users, having other things to do is still important, especially for international travelers who don't get to come to the US very often and are probably going to want to do more than just one convention.
- Local Users. We probably have users users in or very near all of the cities mentioned, but I'm not one of them. Having a local user willing to help set this up is imperative, as it makes dealing with venues so much easier. Even in the age of the Internet, there is no substitute for being there.
- Climate. Dallas and San Francisco are not cities I'd want to host a convention in during the summer. Chicago and New York are not cities I'd want to host a convention in during the winter. While local users wouldn't object, users further away probably would. Whatever city is chosen, the shindig should be timed accordingly so that the climate there is as good as possible.
I'm thinking Chicago in summer. Do we have any users local to that area?

i take amtrak to chicago often; i'd be up for chicago.
make a poll of just 3 city location so users can vote (to remove the ones that wouldn't work). no sense having options for places that just wouldn't work out.
