There has been a noticeable increase in the number of people registering for the forums with the express purpose of posting spam.
While I applaud the mods for quickly locking or deleting these spam posts, why don't they also ban that user from posting under that username again? Especially when it's obvious they registered only to post spam.
I know that it won't cut down on the occurrences of spam, but it still looks better to ban them in addition to locking or deleting posts.

Well, no. That's like killing a fly with a cannonball... you'd take out too much innocent stuff.

Moderators cannot ban people, an admin must do it. We admins ban 100% of spammers we encounter or are made aware of.

Why not disallow people from posting links in their first 4 or 5 posts?

Then you'll get people who will post things like "fdklfdklsfdkaswieoruw4e" for their first 4 or 5 posts and then get to post their spam link. You can easily (and quickly) do that before a mod or admin could figure it out.

Besides, the software doesn't have that ability out of the box, and we don't have the resources to have that custom-coded, especially considering the low payoff.

P.S. <rant>Why does everyone feel the need to post in every damned spam thread? Why can't they just ignore them?</rant>

It helps bump them to the top so it's easier for you to see them!

They should use the Report Abuse link -- that's how you make us aware of something. Padding your post count isn't.
