Are there any freeware apps. or low cost softwares that can create a panoramic image out of a series?

I took about 12 images from my balcony using a tripod and my digital camera and want to stitch them together into one panoramic image.

iBook G4 | 1.2ghz | 768mb ram | combodrive | airport extreme
iPhone 3GS | 32 GB | Jailbreak, or no Jailbreak

There are many low cost applications available. But I only found one free app:

http://hugin.sourceforge.net/

Of the low cost apps, Photoshop Elements does nice panoramas.

Didn’t your digital camera come with software for this? My Canon has a ‘stitch assist’ mode for shooting and an app for stitching the shots together.

The Canon PhotoStitch software is absolute crap compared to Hugin. Hugin is really the best out there; unfortunately the last time I looked the official release for OS X was old and the latest contributed build was unstable (as in, it crashed repeatedly on me), so I run the Linux version in VMware. I see now that there's a newer prerelease build so things may have changed.

The HP Photosmart software (free download from HP) includes a Stitch program that seems to work just fine for me. You might give that a try.

I've made dozens of panoramas in HuginOSX, just make sure to save often since it can go down without reason. Also sometimes it refuses to stitch the image together nicely, leaving all sorts of whacky artifacts, just save the file and restart the program.

Canon photostitch seems broken with 10.5.4. Tested on PPC and Intel, it hangs permanently at the save step.

There are also Calico and Doubletake. Neither is free, but they are reasonably priced.
