How to make a Lion Install DVD

Ok this is how you make a bootable Lion install disk. First purchase and download it. When its finished downloading the installer will be in your applications folder. Right click on the Lion installer and select show package contents.
Next go into "Contents" then go inside "Shared Support" then inside find "INstallESD.dmg"
Copy this file "InstallESD.dmg to your desktop.
Next go to Disk Utility in Application Folder, Utilities.
Click on the Burn button then go to your desktop and select InstallESD.dmg
Put a blank DVD in your drive, a 4.7GB disk is fine and burn it.
You now have a 10.7 Lion Install DVD

It's not necessary to copy the file to your desktop. Otherwise the rest of these instructions are fine.

Its easier for n00bs to copy it to the desktop, at least I think it is. Was trying to make the instructions usable for every one.

It's fine. You can also make a bootable USB stick or an external hard drive by restoring to it instead of burning.

What's weird is I had no idea you can boot from a DVD that has nothing but a .dmg on it.

It won't have a dmg on it. It'll be a bootable Mac OS X Lion system.

But the instructions said you basically burn the .dmg onto a blank DVD. How does it become a bootable Lion system?

A disc image is a file that replicates a disc structure. When Disk Utility burns an image to disc it's restoring the logical information back to a physical form.

Not doubting, just want to understand how this happens...
I doesn't burn the DMG file, it burns the content and structure of the DMG to the DVD.
It's like when you burn music from iTunes to a music CD. You don't burn the actual files (MP3s or AACs), your burn the music (content) in a format that's an audio CD.

Whatever, it's a bad, stupid system. Mr and Mrs average will get no further than, right click on the Lion installer to see the package con.... before rolling their eyes up and giving up.
Given the asinine stupidity of having the installer delete the installer app once it has finished the correct thing for apple to have done would have been to step the user through a media creation on install.
Simply have the first thing the installer does be a big button that says "create bootable dvd/backup" which then prompts the user to insert a DVD or USB stick before making a copy onto it. THEN installing the OS, THEN deleting itself.
The current installation method is by far the stupidest thing about Lion.

I'm sorry you're so upset by this. Reinstalling Mac OS is extremely rare and a built-in, bootable, recovery partition seems pretty simple to me. Certainly no more complicated for "Mr. And Mrs. Average."

Bootable disc works fine. I had no issues following the directions.
As far as Mr. and Mrs. Average are concerned, if they want to, then I bet they'll figure it out pretty quick.

With that suggestion, you hit it spot on!
Yes, it's OK to dispense with an install DVD, but with this simple suggestion Apple could've eliminated a whole bunch of complaining...
Apple is way too much in love with being on the cutting edge...
