Core Duo. Good name.

Core 2 Duo. Sheesh. Awful name. Boyz 2 Men.

Maybe Apple will rebrand the processors like they did for the PPCs? Probably not, but they should. CPU makers are incapable of making decent brand names for their product.

I hope Apple will actually use the Core 2 derived Xeon (Xeon 5100 series) for the Mac Pro rather than Conroe.

But Conroe might end up in the iMac. And Merom will certainly be in the rev B MBP.

Their logos are starting to get a bit... crowded. And I agree the Core 2 Duo is a silly name... sounds very redundant.

I'm not a big fan of the name, but it's not that bad.

I do absolutively hate the logo though.

I agree... the name could be worse. Core 2 Duo II would be even worse

They have no other choice: the new Xeon will find its way in at least one Mac Pro configuration (the one that will replace today's quad). Eventually more.

You can't. That configuration is not supported by Core 2 Duo.

For that you'll need Xeons.

No they weren't.

No offense, but if you'd take a moment to actually read the thread you would see that I already linked to Intel's spec sheet for the Core 2 based Xeon.

The Dual Core Xeon 51xx is basically an SMP capable Conroe. It was announced just a couple of days ago.

When they say it will ship sometime in August, does that at all correlate to how quickly the chips will appear in the MB or MBP?

The Mac Pro and Xserve will probably be announced at WWDC 8/7. They will go Core 2 (Woodcrest and maybe Conroe). I'd expect the rev B MBP to show up in Aug/Sep and it will likely get Merom. I don't think Apple needs to upgrade the MB to Merom till MWSF in Jan. But of course they could just to spice it up for the holiday buying season.

Thanks. I'm getting a new laptop soon, but have to wait until August for the WWDC (I want something top-o-the-line ).

Yeah, unless you really need it right now, I'd wait and see what happens at WWDC.

I'm definitely planning on getting a Merom MBP rev B, but I wouldn't be surprised if it takes till end of September until they actually start shipping. Of course if Apple changes nothing in the design of the MBP they could release it much sooner, but I do hope for more than just a CPU drop-in replacement (DL burner, latch, HDD placement, port layout, cooling, etc.)

If they weren't powering Macs now, Intel would be the laughing stock of PPC zealots.

Just be glad we don't have those awful Core™2 Duo inside stickers. Sheesh.

Anyway. It's just a CPU. Taste has nothing to do with it. It's all about power and power consumption.

Typical Mac thread, everyone is talking about how they don't like the sound of the name or the look of the logo.

No one has mentioned yet that for a couple hundred dollars, you can buy one of these things, put it into your Intel Mini, and your Mini will put the G5 powermac to shame.
