—Gong Li (...she is "average"...)
"Huang Shengyi has a horse face"

Wow, the Chinese are tough critics of their female stars.

The Chinese think Gong Li is unattractive because she has thick lips? That seals it — they are all gay over there.

Whoa, and that girl they say is almost perfect? She doesn't hold a candle to Gong Li.

I began to think they (critics) are seeing it differently. Maybe, they are jealous and don't want to flaunt their beautiful women to the eyes of the world.

Maybe the phrases used don't have the same degree of negativity that we're ascribing to them. English is clearly not the first language of the writer. Maybe they're just mild idioms in Chinese. Anyone here speak Chinese?

Yeah, that's kinda the anime look. Is that a general astetic in oriental cultures?

I think in western culture, beauty is not so constrained. It seems that symmetry is more important, and if that is there, large lips or small lips, large eyes or small eyes are fine.

Because her eyes are so big that contact lens are smaller than her eyes, we think big eyes are beautiful.

Chinese people (especially those on the Mainland) tend to be blunt in speech. That's just the way we are. Moms say stuff to their daughters like, "Your face is too ugly; men will never love you and you'll die alone." Seriously. Or stuff like, "Your cooking tastes like crap; men will never love you and you'll die alone." Moms talking to their daughters epitomizes Chinese bluntness.

This is so incredibly true, it's hard to believe if you haven't actually been to China (or interacted with people who grew up there). It's one of those things that makes you realize just how ethnocentric our concepts of culture really are.

Yes I agree it is true, even so in the more Westernized Taiwan. For instance I know a Taiwanese guy who was routinely told by his parents that he was a mistake (i.e. not planned), just to tease him, but it was true.

I wouldn't be surprised if those comments about the women are the same, partly in jest. Certainly eyes are very important, eyelid surgery is very common across Asia.

Parents actually threaten to disown their children if they fail to meet academic standards. And constantly demean their children, calling them worthless pieces of **** if they can't live up to expectations. It's just the Chinese culture.

Huh.

So if Alec Baldwin were from China…it would be "just part of his culture" ?

Weird. I've never heard of this surgery. Is this to get that "anime" look?

If that were the case, we'd be hearing of a lot of school shootings in China (even the Communists would be able to hide such things from the world) and Taiwan. Which isn't the case.

That said, I think VT has more to do with teasing and bullying from peers than from pressure from parents.

The “Oriental look” is indeed very unpopular in China. Big eyes, big nose, small lips, round face, that’s how to look. Most Chinese people, for instance, find Lucy Liu ugly, because of her large epethentic fold and sharp features.

And not all parents treat their children as described above, I’d have to say. There is a lot more bickering in general than here, at least, but I’ve yet to actually hear anyone I know being called worthless pieces of sh*t or mistakes because they fail to fulfil their parents’ academic expectations.
