Not following any news creates ignorance. You certainly can shut yourself up in a (proverbial) hole, but you will become unaware of what is going on around you. I think it even begins to breed within a person selfishness, as they begin to pay less attention to the things going on around them

That said, I don't think that you need to follow daily news like crazy, or that you need to set aside time everyday to watch CNN or Foxnews.

Knowing this place, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned anything about "te news."

Or maybe I just missed it.

Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

I think a certain amount of "selfishness" might be a good antidote for te "nationalized busybody-ness" of our society. Maybe we should start giving more of a sh*t about our communities and less of a sh*t about whether Darrell Waltrip cheated or not.
Why are the noisy kids next door more important than Anna Nicole? Aside from their overly large bass speakers, what they do affects me less than what Congress does.

Counting 7 Years without a TV, and I barely read the newspapers, like, once a month, and only for arts stuff.

Counting 3 months without Internet; using Internet cafés only, 3 hours a week.

Yet, I am better informed than many people around me.

Go figure...

I wish I were. However, I prefer the idea that I became more of a critic regarding the News. When I watch TV, at friends or my parents home, I find the news totally uninteresting, and very superficial. Of course, that is about the News on French canadian channels; lately, what passes as news is some girly fight between the 2 major parties of Quebec. On the Federal Arena, the Conservatives are pretty much making a lot of noise about the Liberals, yet, add absolutely nothing to a democratic debate.

Sure, its News, but is it useful? Not in my mind... So instead of spending Big money on cable, TV etc, I try to get information where I believe it will be useful for me, and there are plenty of places where you can get useful information about the world, if you know what to look for.

But since I don't believe reporters to be objective anyway, I know that the information I will get will reflect someone's interests, and also, mine. So in the end, I rather fetch the information that interest me, where I know I will get it.

MacNN Pol Lounge is a rich mine of such information (those that interest me) because they force me to be critical of myself and the others. That is why I barely post anymore; I don't see the point, either for myself or others.

But that is me.

Nonsense. The kids next door just bother me when I'm trying to get some quiet on weekends. Anna Nicole bothers me — every — freakin' — time — I turn on the TV. Much greater effect on my life.

Yeah, picking all the headlines off the three of the main categories instead of a few headlines from entertainment certainly qualifies as cherry picking. Don't look now, but your ignorance is showing.

Your right, I'm just being a jerk.

I get that way when people are being self-righteous and judgmental of me.

(PS I picked those headline from the TOP OF THE PAGE hence the term "headlines", not from the entertainment section)

TV news is for the people who read women's magazines. It helps the dummies feel informed.

I usually read a whole bunch of (real*) news sites before visiting the forums. That way I've got serious articles to back-up my smart-assery. Not that I provide links often - people groping around in the dark are teh funnay.

I've thought about ignoring the news (and being a happy idiot), but that would leave holes in my knowledge of how things unfolded.

*No, you can't have the links.

If you feel informed after watching TV news, you must be really uninformed.
