Okay I have a simple question to ask. I have a canon digital elph s230 that I've been using for quite some time. I recently took a few movie clips that I'd like to transfer to my powerbook. Now my question is, how do I go about doing this. When I attach the camera it doesn't come up on the desktop/finder; however, iPhoto automatically opens so I can download my pictures (what I have been doing). My question is, is there some way to get my video clips onto my PB. I'm assuming there is, I just want to know if it requires some extra software or should I be able to do it with the standard OSX software?

not a stupid question at all, that can be a bit confusing. i think the software included with the camera allows you to download the movies and pictures, but you can do it without the canon software using Image Capture (Applications-->Image Capture).

connect your camera, and close iPhoto (assuming you have it set to open iPhoto when a camera is plugged into the computer). open image capture (it should see your camera) and it will show all the things on it, including both images and movies. then you can just pick the ones you want and download them.
