OK here is an idea I thought of to keep us busy.

On whatever subject you feel like talking about list the absolute BEST in its field and the absolute WORST in your opinion, no in-betweens. Don't have to constrict it to computer or other geeky stuff either and you can rebuttal others peoples comments. Also try to not to stick to just one subject.

For example:

Best Orange Juice: Tropicana
Worst: Sunny D

Best place to get video games news: GameSpot
Worst: IGN

Best painkiller: Advil
Worst: Aspirin

Best Mario Game: Super Mario 3
Worst: Super Mario Sunshine

Best inkjet Printers: Canon
Worst: Lexmark

Best Airline: Lufthansa
Worst: West Jet

Best Apple Mouse: Wireless Mighty Mouse
Worst: The puck

Best Movie: Batman Begins
Worst: Doom

ETC ETC.

Worst: Agree Aspirin

Best airline: United
Worst: Air Canada and Westjet

Best printers: Canon agree
Did not encounter the worst one yet.

Best movie: The Godfather part one and two.
Worst one: Stepmom

Best wine: Pouilly-fuisse or from the Napa valley
worst one: any wine from Quebec

Most beautiful place I have been: Equal between Versailles and St. Paul's cathedral

Best orange juice is totally not Tropicana. Tropicana is pretty good, but not the best. The best is Odwalla, specifically the Odwalla Valencia orange juice. Second best would be the Odwalla non-Valencia, then Simply Juice or whatever it's called. Then maybe Tropicana.

Worst is probably a toss-up between Sunny D and Minute Made.

Never seen that brand. It is in big chain stores?

For the recored I sorta like Sunny D but it doesn't taste like orange juice and I know it is full of chemicals so i don't touch it. I hope nobody raises their kids on it.

I like most darker Canadian beers. Watered down stuff like Coors makes me ill.

Sorry I didn't mention which Canadian beers - I can't recall, but I've been exposed to a variety over the years. I haven't tried a dark Canadian brew in a while, so I shall give it a shot to be fair.

If you want to try something amber with stout overtones - try Smithwycks. Mm mm good.

As for domestic American brews, I like plain old Budweiser. Coors also has that weird after taste, so I'm no big fan.

Never had anything by Unibroue, I take it?

And I'm sorry, but Bud and Guinness are rather generic (at least the varieties you find in the states; the German original "Budweiser" is actually brewed by a completely unaffiliated co., while the local Guinness is much tastier).

The Guinness you know and love is smooth, sure, but without much flavor; there are much better stouts out there.

Smithwick's is pretty good, though.

It's an all-organic brand. I know they carry it in Safeway and Albertson's in California, and I'm pretty sure I saw it at Shaw's in Boston the other day. I don't recall if they had it at the grocery stores in Minnesota, but it was definitely available at some places. They make some really good fruit juices and smoothies, but they're definitely not the cheapest.

I'm no crusader, but I do try to avoid diong business with companies that I know have a history of very unethical behavior.

Odwalla is owned by Coke, which is a company I zero respect for and I try to avoid their products.

Naked juice is reported to use irradiation for their juice products. The jury is still out on the real long term effects of irradiated foods but there is plenty of research that certain food contain compounds which are utterly foreign (and for which no long term studies exist as to their impact on humans) after undergoing irradiation.

If that kind of thing bothers you, consider it an FYI. If that kind of thing doesn't bother you, no big whoop.

Er, most pre-packaged foods are irradiated. Heat pasteurization is just a form of irradiation. Hell, by putting the food out where it can be seen it's technically being irradiated by the lighting (artificial or otherwise). Radiation is not an inherently bad thing, nor is radioactivity.

Every meal you've ever cooked contains irradiated food.

Besides, irradiated milk doesn't need to be refridgerated. How cool is that?

Not to derail the thread but those are rather ridiculous comparisons. Heating something up to a certain internal temperature is not the same as giving it the equivalent of 1 billion chest x-rays.

I realize that with the current FDA (absence of) regulation in labeling, I probably do eat foods that are irradiated without knowing it. That doesn't suddenly remove the health concerns raised by it nor negate my opposition to it.

It very well may that such concerns are unfounded and science will eventually prove that there are no long term consecquences. However, I find it unwise to disallow consumers to make those choices for themselves in the absence of definitive scientific evidence by not requiring proper labeling. You can't lie on a package about how much fat or protein it contains, but you can omit entirely whether or not the product has been subjected to massive doses of x-ray or gamma radiation.

I definitely agree with you there. I just think all the negative press about irradiated food is likely to be nothing more than scare-mongering. I would have no problem eating irradiated food were it labeled as such, although it would definitely be nice to know the exact method of irradiation used.

I think that's usually due to a temperature difference between the inside of the bottle and the outside air, or due to some kind of vacuum packing. There's that little space in the top of the bottle with air that changed temperatures when going into/coming out of the fridge, causing the bottle to compress/expand, meaning when the cap is removed, pressure is equalized. I've noticed this a lot on half-gallon jugs of apple juice that are getting close to empty. The air inside will change temps causing a hissing when I open it.

Other brands of water not matter the temp do not do that and they look like they are packaged the same.

Since the water is made by Coke I wouldn't be surprised if they want it to make that sound on purpose.

annnnnd just how do you think its heated internally anyway? its not a big oven, its irradiated.

people have this bizarre notion that irradiating equals radioactive when they're really completely different things.

As far as OJ goes, there was a great report on MSNBC or the like about all these people that caught Hep C or e coli poisoning or the Plague or something from Odwalla juice.

Basically it turned out that a lot of the juice came from fruit picked from the ground and hence contaminated with whateverwillkillyou. Of course Odwalla had "policies" against tha field labor picking fruit from teh ground rather than from trees but it's not as if they had any particular way to enfrce it when it comes to the people actually doin' the pickin'.

The Army a few years back was REALLY close to sigining with Odwalla to provide all their juice and came to the same conclusion, to much contamination by juice from groundfruit.

tasty.

Um yeah, that's exactly my point. Actually even if it was an oven it would be irradiated. The only difference is the wavelength of radiation used. Traditional ovens, campfires, and heating elements produce infrared radiation, microwaves produce microwave radiation, lightbulbs produce visible radiation, uranium produces gamma radiation, stars produce radiation on all sorts of wavelengths. Everything in existence in constantly being irradiated, and when you cook your food you're purposefully irradiating it.

people have this bizarre notion that irradiating equals radioactive when they're really completely different things.
Well no, they're not completely different, they've very closely related. Irradiating something means exposing it to radiation. Radioactive means it produces radiation. Things that have been irradiated are generally radioactive. For example, when you cook your chicken in the oven you irradiate it by exposing it to infrared radiation. Once you take it out of the oven it continued to emit infrared radiation and is therefore radioactive.

A living human is also radioactive.

Yeah, that's why they started pasteurizing their juices. They didn't used to.

Gonna disagree with you here on your choices for worst. Aspirin isn't the worst. Tylenol is. Tylenol can cause liver damage in relatively low doses whereas Aspirin can lower the risk stroke and heart attacks and possibly even some forms of cancer. Take Aspirin with caffeine and codeine: it makes it much more effective.

West Jet isn't the worse. Air Canada is. Lost luggage, rude staff, and flight delays. They suck more than West Jet.
