I find that since I've upgraded, there have been little probs with SPSS's stability, for example it crashes every time I want to make a graph. It worked fin under Jaguar, but it glitches now.
I checked the website but they don't seem to have much for macs in general there.

I have the same config as you have, but don't have any problems with SPSS (except that it is extremly slow compared to the pc-version). I emailed a support person at SPSS regarding SPSS not working on my old iBook 800 after I installed panther. The person told me that there are some known issues with SPSS and panther which they are working on. So I guess there will be an update soon...

We'll see how fast they do update. I have my doubts it will be speedy.
Thanks.

I just wish SPSS for Mac didn't need a different licence to SPSS for Win.

My uni offers SPSS for Windows for 7. They offer SPSS for Mac for 600. It's a course requirement, but there's no way I'm spending a significant chunk of my loan on a stats package!

(Sorry to rant. Seeing the name SPSS come up anywhere makes me start ranting. I think it's a pavlovian thing.)

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

If you've installed SPSS and Panther (Mac OS X 10.3), then you may have a problem running SPSS. Mine crashes immediately.

SPSS is a statistical analysis package, used by everyone out there from social scientists to molecular biologists. It is one of the few alternatives for crunching statistical numbers. Let's just say Excel does this poorly, and I think I'm putting that mildly.

My setup:

2002 iBook (Dual-USB), 700MHz G3, 640 MB RAM

Steps I have taken, because I read them someplace else:

Wiped my hard drive, started with a clean install of both Panther and SPSS (without any non-Apple apps present).
Deleted my SPSS preferences file.
Deleted a folder & application installed by SPSS "DataDirect ODBC Folder"

I decided to contact SPSS directly. They started out seeming helpful, but now I'm not sure.

My experiences with SPSS support:

Despite taking 48 hours to reply intially, things have been fairly friendly. I provided them with the crash log (which is below) and the report from the Apple System Profiler. They find nothing wrong with my machine, and had the following to say:

Josh,

Thank you for sending your information so fast.

There doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary in your system profile.

We are currently looking at the potential of there being a compatibility_issue with SPSS 11.0.2 for Macintosh, OS 10.3.1_and G3 processors. We are still investigating the possible causes. I need to caution you that there may not be a resolution to this problem, as this version of the OS is not supported. I will notify you if I obtain any useful information.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this case.

Also, please confirm receipt of this email and let me know whether you consider the matter resolved.

Thank you,

Steve Aldrich - Technical Support Specialist
SPSS Inc.
Email: [email protected]
Tel: +1.312.651.3410 / Fax +1.312.264.3444

To which I suggest everyone reply - "NO, I DON'T CONSIDER THIS MATTER RESOLVED". If you choose to contact SPSS to put more pressure on them to fix this software, you will need to provide them with your serial number before they even try to find out what your problem is.

I found that Pro Fit works just as well for many calculations that you might need to do under SPSS and the thrial version is fairly good. This will be my substitute for the time being.

Believe it or not, what I'm doing is not very complicated (in my mind). I'm trying to generate simple boxplots that show outliers as well as variances. SPSS is available through my university for $30, which is why I went that route.

Thank you for your suggestion, and I will give pro Fit a try.

SPSS is slow here, but it works without incident unless I'm doing a graph. Then I get about 20 "HOOPS warnings" per graph. After clicking through them all, I can see my graphs without a problem. I don't know what that's about. Personally, I'm using R for most of my stats now. It's free and works. And it's more capable than SPSS.

This is an application simply called "R"?

Sorry, I emailed torifile to clear this up, here was his response:

R is a lot like SAS. It's pretty complex but very powerful. It has great graphics capabilities and there are MANY packages designed for specific purposes. There is now an aqua frontend for it and it's got complete feature parity with windows because they are built from the same source. In fact, R runs better in OS X than it does on windows. You can get the pre-built OS X binary from http://gifi.stat.ucla.edu/pub/ . It's a double click installer. Once you get that installed, you have many of the basic abilities ready to go. If you want to add other packages you get them from http://cran.r-project.org/ . There are books written about how to use R (and S+, it's commercial big brother) but many basics can be found in online docs and some of the books are also available in pdf format for free.

The learning curve is steep but I find myself using it more and more as I become increasingly frustrated with SPSS.

Sorry to be slightly OT, but since there seems to be some stat ppl reading this thread, I wanted to know if any of you have used SAS remotely via X11. If so, please check out this thread: http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=188865 Thanks.
