I have a question.

Since the new iPod loses its previous 6-pin FireWire port, can the new iPods still act as an external FireWire drive?

Does it function in the same way as the old ones (just new cables), or has this functionality been lost?

Yes. (look under "Capacity")

It can function as an external drive either through FireWire or USB (when the USB software update comes through, circa June).

Of course, the place where you want to use it as a hard drive will be the place where your iPod FireWire dongle ain't.
