Well, I released the patch tonight. You can find it through its normal channels:

http://www.bluebomber.com/misc/AIMX_...nner_Patch.sit

For those of you that can't make the patch work (and this happens every single time), there's also a pre-patched version of AIMX in the /misc directory, ready to go. I'm not sure how in the world it made it in there, though ;)

Everyone enjoy their new de-bannered AIM client!

ALSO: One more thing. Who here can tell me where the information for the version number is stored in AIMX? Like, on the Get Info window, it'll say. I know for Classic apps, it was stored in a TEXT, but I'm not sure about Carbon software....

Much thanks to anyone that can help!

Works like a charm... I love it. So does the sightly reduced cpu load on my Pismo 400.

Anyone else have trouble getting people to show up idle on their buddy list in this new version?

Excellent

I was waiting for this before installing the new version of AIM.

I can't live with the banners anymore, after using this on the last version.

In Mac OS X, the "info.plist" file is used
Contents/Info.plist
...and the version string that you see in the "Get Info" window is at the "CFBundleGetInfoString" key:

<key>CFBundleGetInfoString</key>
<string>AOL Instant Messenger (SM) 4.5.794 for Macintosh. Copyright 1994-2002 America Online, Inc.</string>

In Classic, the Finder gets it from the 'vers' resource inside the application file itself... which is located inside the package at:
Contents/MacOS/AOL Instant Messenger (SM)

Call me paranoid, but would you please tell us exactly what your patch binary does? :)

Be as technical as you like.
Sure, no problem.

Although my patch is for an OS X application, the patch itself has to be Classic because I don't know of any other application that can create native patches. I used ResCompare 2.6 to make the patch, then edit a few resources of the patch, like the icon, and some of the version information (do a Get Info on the patch itself).

Once the patch is run, you select the "AIM Resources" file in AIMX, then it takes my hacked AIM Resources file I made, and replaces the bannered file with my de-bannered one. The original is then moved to the Trash, but not deleted. The installer then throws out a message saying something like, "Enjoy your new client."

That's it. My patch doesn't do anything else besides its intended purpose. Rest easy, I'm just a college student that hates ads :)
