It looks like The Pixies with all original members are coming back. I just got an e-mail announcing that tickets go on sale this Saturday for a Chicago show in November. I've been waiting a long time for this.

Yeah I was fortunate to get tickets to a couple of shows on their "warm-up" tour. Just a few short weeks away...

you get a kipper for dinner for saying that. The Pixies wil always be relevant, Kurt Cobain only got into music to try to emulate them, so they muist have had some importance to music. Frank Black is also a genius. yay

From their web-site.

The band's influence was far-reaching; U2's Bono referred to The Pixies as "one of America's greatest bands ever;" David Bowie called their work "just about the most compelling music of the entire '80s," and Kurt Cobain, who identified "Surfer Rosa" as his favorite album of that entire decade, confessed, when writing "Smells Like Teen Spirit," that, "Basically, I was ripping off The Pixies."

OK, I originally wrote a rant about the concept of relevance and what the hell that had to do with anything. But I realized that I may want to ask you to define it rather than go off in the usual NN way.

If by relevance, you mean a notion of musical history that moves in a linear way with one music building on what came before, then I guess I just disagree with that concept. Music seems to circle back, find strange backwaters that have been abandoned, dredge up old influences and recycle motifs, sounds and ideas.

I guess the older I get, the more I couldn't give a crap about the concept of "the new." It seems like ahistoricism at best, a marketing gimmick at worst. But hell, I'm listening to a Pere Ubu album at the moment so I may just be an old fart.

On topic, If the pixies get together is like the recent mission of burma reunion where the band members just seemed to have fun playing together then I'll be excited to see them. If, on the other hand, it turns into bag the lucre tour, I'll be quite sad.

Two steps forward (six steps back)

goddamnit. everytime i read a mention of kurt cobain in the same breath as the pixies i want to ****ing explode. nirvana couldnt hold a ****ing CANDLE to the pixies. period. ever. not even ****ing close. i dont care how many records they sold, how many critics thought they "blew the music industry wide open!" or how many sappy depressed grunge kids cried when he died.

the guitar work of joey santiago makes my head hurt.

id actually like to see this reunion show. most reunions or thoughts of reunions make me wanna vomit. i bet the reformed pixies can still kick ass.

Holy cow. Pere Ubu, MoB, *and* the Pixies in the same post. Nice, man. Really nice.

News of MoB doing their first new album in two decades was a nice surprise. I discovered them after the fact, but they are still a first rate thump 20 years later, not sounding too dated.
I, ASIMO.

1. All of the concerts on their warm-up did sell out...in about a minute and a half.
2. They're selling live cd's of every show they do, you can order them online or they will be ready about ten minutes after the show. (somethings gotta pay for Frank's divorce)
3. Yes..Yes I will buy it.

Will do, I'll post a lot of pics as well.

For their first show in Minneapolis they have a "special guest" opening for them...nobody knows who. The wait is killing me.

The reunion is a total bummer.

Two choices:

1. Don't Go - be bummed missed Pixies.
2. Go - be bummed they are old and can't pull it.

So, bummed no matter what.

nay It was announced after the rest of the dates. It's a real small venue and about half of the tickets went to their friends so it should be an interesting crowd.

They are playing the summer festival circuit over here in the UK, I'm heading to T in the Park in Scotland to see them play. It will rule, oh yes.

They are playing in Ireland as well but the sad thing is that they are supporting the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I find this personally insulting. There were rumors of Lou Reed playing with them, this would have made my year. Still unconfirmed though.
