We have Safari, Omniweb, IE, TrailBlazer, Opera, Camino, Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Lynx,... have I forgotten something?

And now Shiira. It looks like an aquafied Safari to me. Really: If you want features, go Omniweb, if you want simplicity, go Safari and if you want crossplatform abilities go for a Mozilla flavour or Opera.

The Mac OS X world really needs no more browser alternatives.

I just checked it out and it only weighs in at 1.2 megs due to using Panther's built-in WebKit for rendering.

Pros:

• It loads my University's portal without complaining about Java not being installed (Mozilla, Camino, and Firefox all complain that Java is not installed. Checking and unchecking the "Enable Java" radio button in preferences fixes it strangely enough).
• The interface is very quick and tabs can be manipulated quickly by dragging and dropping to reorder them.
• Very complete history and preferences.
• Most of the completeness and compatibility of Safari due to WebKit utilization.

Cons:

• Editing this post in Shiira makes system response a little laggy when the looping GIFs are visible. Camino is worse, though. I was ready to throw my computer out the window the other day when Camino started acting up when I was trying to edit some text in a textarea on a reply page. Man was I steamed.
• Bookmark management leaves something to be desired.
• Tabbing from form elements does not work, Shiira puts the input focus to the location bar.

This browser's actually not half bad. I'd say it kicks the crap out of Camino. I wonder what's wrong with it... Can anyone find anything wrong with it?

There seems to be a lack of clarity about what exactly Shiira is. It is not just a "shell" for Safari � it's a completely different application. However, it uses the same WebKit rendering that Safari uses, so a Web page in Shiira will generally have exactly the same appearance as the same page in Safari. The rest of the browser appears to be custom-made.

It has the same three options Safari has for accepting cookies. It allows you to show and remove any cookies you want, or remove them all at once, and lastly it allows for removal of all cookies when you quit the app.

I'm rather liking it. It has its shortcomings as they all do. Even though it uses WebKit as Safari does I swear it is loading pages faster (maybe it is just displaying the pages faster?).

I just noticed a weird bug when clicking pictures on .Mac picture websites. Click a picture to be enlarged and the window will open twice with a little visual glitch to suggest something fishy, but only appear to have opened one window. Plus, it's open-source, so if there's some little thing that bugs you about the interface, you can tweak it.

Lynx ignores most layout cues in HTML, so sites with complex tables/frames/etc aren't all that useful. While Lynx is basically a text-based interface, Links is more like a GUI for character-based displays (sort of like old DOS-based pseudo-windowing systems on the PC), and does an impressive job of displaying sites with complicated layouts.

Well, it's definitely somewhat buggy (and seems to suffer the same performence losses as OmniWeb when there's a lot of animated GIF's on the page), and missing a few key keyboard shortcuts (such as command-right arrow to go forward (though command-left arrow works fine ) and command-shift-arrows to switch between tabs) but other than that, I like it much more than Safari, although I do have to laugh at using a browswer called Mahi-Mahi.

Definitely nice that it's open-source though. I think I'll play with it a bit.

For now (that is, until OW doesn't eat up a GB of HD space an hour consistantly), it's my default browser.

Edit: n/m about command-right arrow not working...

Also, the performence loss with a lot of gif's isn't quite as bad as I thought it was. But geez, does it need a spell-checker.

Actually, I just didn't look at the menus well enough. Shiira uses Command-{ and Command-} to go back and forth between tabs, just like Camino.

But geez, does it need a spell-checker.

Did you get the latest build out of CVS? I sent them a patch to fix some of the spelling and grammatical errors a few days ago. Some of the stuff should still be reworded, but at least there should be less "all your base are belong to us" in there now...

It has a spell checker, same as any Cocoa app (check spelling, check spelling as you type, and the other one i don't remember). It's just only available from a contextual menu in the text box, rather than from the Edit menu as is normal.

It's integrated with WebKit and it's pretty simple outside of that, so there isn't a lot of clutter taking up resources.
