Hello:
I have a 12" 1Ghz PB that I'm very sadly going to have to sell - our car died and we need the money more than a 2nd powerbook.
What steps should I take to prepare the hard drive for the new owner? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
James

Boot from the install DVD and do a disk formatting clean install of the OS. When it's done, just shut the machine down so that the new owner can set up their own account the first time it's booted.
Of course, back up everything of yours that you need before doing this.

I would zero the drive when you reformat, it will take a while, but it will make sure they new owner can't recover anything that used to be on it.
