Hi,

Just purchased a brand new iBook from http://www.diversifiedcompouters.net. Excellent service!. I installed OSX and that has left my 10 gig drive extremely fragmented. Since the iBook will only boot off of the CD's it comes with, I have tried to burn a CD with Norton Utilities and a system folder from the iBook install CD however that failed to be recognized.

Can someone here PLEASE help me in trying to figure out how to startup off another volume with Norton Utilities or a similar disk defragmentation program with either a USB zip drive or burning a CD. I'm using Toast 5.0.1 btw.

In the Toast 5 manuel I think it tells you how to do that.

How is the performance of your new iBook under OSX?

Duplicate your System Folder.

Trim it by hand - extensions, control panels, etc.

Make a disk image of the Norton CD using Disc Copy - save as read/write image.

Mount the image. Delete the Systems. Put your trimmed system in place.

Drag the mounted image that has been altered to the Toast window.

Hit the "data" button and click "bootable" (Toast 5 might be different...)

If you did it right that CD will be bootable with Norton on it - btw, make sure the system you put on the image has the Norton extensions and whatnot.

Should work. Can't check right now... I'll reread this in the morning and hope it makes sense...

Yeah, I just got a new G4 and tried to boot from my Norton disk with no luck. This explains why:

I just ordered my ibook as well so it looks like I need to order a new disk.

I'm not sure which version of Toast you have but if its the OEM version and not
the deluxe version I think the options might be trimmed down for the OEM version
but I might be wrong but I know that the OEM Toast 4 does not have the capability
to make a temporary partition and the deluxe version can so check it out.

I find IomegaWare that you can download from iomega.com is invaluable for just what you are wanting Rev2Liv. You get a new bright yellow iomegaware control strip module at the bottom of your screen. From there "Open Tools" and then the far righthand icon on the screen that comes up, when clicked, walks you through the making of a "Rescue Disk" with a scaled down System. You can then install whatever program(s) you want like--NUM, Tech Tools, NAV, Disk Warrior--and it works extremely well (of course set the Startup Disk CP to Rescue Disk!). I don't have an iBook--yet!

Thanks alot for t he insight into Iomega Tools. I checked under V2.8 and the create a rescue disc (far right button) was shaded out indicating that the feature was available. I tried booting with no extensions but to no avail. I then made a recourse to install V3.0 of Iomegaware, followed the same procedure and the create a rescue disc button was still shaded out.
