Shareware

1. CandyBar
2. Checkbook
3. HourWorld
4. WeatherPop Advance
5. iView Media Pro

Freeware
1. mPlayer
2. forty-two
3. wClock
4. Cocktail
5. ThemeChanger

I cannot imagine using my PowerBook without one of these programs. If I were to pick just ONE out of all these, I think I would have to go with:

ThemeChanger + CandyBar

Ok, that's 2. But they kind of go together.
Being able to skin the GUI with these 2 programs is just so sweet!

Graphic Converter, definitely!

Carbon Copy Cloner for any/all OS updates (run before you update to any new Mac OS!).

Spam Stopper for encoding emails in HTML!

Audio HiJack for ripping audio from DVDs the easy way!

Uh... that's all I use regularly...

What's your definition of shareware? To me, the end user, GraphicConverter is the same as OS X. I pay to register the software, and then I get updates to it. Isn't that what we're talking about here? I'm paying my share....

For those who keep mentioning "Meteorologist"...it's freeware, not shareware.

Well, if I limit myself to shareware titles I have actually paid for, the list is pretty short.

1. VueScan
2. ZTerm
3.
4.
5.

I use Acquisition, which is really "nagware", but I don't mind the nagging so I haven't paid for it. Plus I don't use it so much. I've also been using Camino for a long time, but it's really freeware (free as in speech and free as in beer).

I thought it was freeware but the guy that was creating it made it shareware?

1. OmniWeb
2. FruitMenu
3. iOrganize
4. OneKey
5. OmniOutliner

...and I'll toss out a few in the freeware category that I wouldn't want to do without:

1. iChoose
2. ClearDoc
3. Meteorolgist

1. iKey
2. Autopairs
3. FastScripts
4. MenuCalendar
5. XShelf

TinkerTool and Unsanity software also. I paid for GraphicConverter somewhere around 1993 and Lemke stills honors the $15 license.

Ok it sounds interesting - how does this compare to OmniOutliner?

One thing I found wanting is in OmniOutliner whenever you search you're always searching in the *entire* file - there seems to be no option to just search in the notes associated with a single list item (that's usually my working mode)...

1: LaunchBar (this becomes ingrained into your mind that you can command-space to access just about anything on your computer, even ones using windows at school )

2: Graphic Converter (allows for like a zillion image formats)

3: Watson (check my favorite tv shows schedules and such)

4: Synergy (excellent, thorough itunes tool)

5: Audio Hijack (save those Radio 1 Streams!)

Mail and the Finder are not free in that you have to buy Mac OS X in order to obtain them.

X-Chat Aqua - IRC was one application area I wasn't happy with on OS X before this.
NetNewsWire - I couldn't imagine going back to browsing websites for everything now - I even stopped reading sites that don't offer feeds.
Fink
Fire - Only recently started using it, after getting fed up with the official ICQ and MSN clients. Working well so far.
VLC

I think what he was trying to say was that they are components of the OS, which is a commercial product.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

No, what Agent69 said is that you need to BUY OS X to get those programs, not USE them.
