It looks like subego is the only other person here with honest, bravery, and integrity.

My wife says I smell like salami.

My dad with Alzheimers is most comfortable showering just a couple times a week. I hope that some day I grow to requiring fewer showers, minus the dimensia.

What kind of test?

Maybe this thread is a test.

Mostly, I either hold things up to my nose, or I hold my nose close to whatever I'm trying to smell.

How come our noses can't smell ourselves like other people can?

For a similar reason we can't smell water. It's so ever-present, we're desensitized to it.

I am told, though I don't know if it's correct, if we could detect the odor of water it would be similar to ammonia.

As a politically charged aside, I often use this as an analogy with people who think sexuality is something "for the bedroom".

Similar to being unable to smell water, people are so used to seeing couples hold hands, or pushing a baby in a stroller, it often doesn't register these are public display of sexuality.

My initial response may have had that in mind.

Since cleaning out my washing machine, better.

Sheets and shirts I wore often started coming out smelling musty. No amount of bleach or washing machine cleaning tablets fixed it. I had to disassemble the whole thing and bleach and scrub every surface in there. All better now, but I ended up throwing out my six favorite shirts (plain black v-necks) because they would get all sorts of stanky if I started to sweat at all.

Pretty bad.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Next time, before pitching them, give em a good long soak in white vinegar. Won't stain, no smell once it dries, and if the funk is biological in nature, should kill it dead.

Also highly recommended instead of soap in a carpet steamer.

one cycle with vinegar in empty washer also helps, as does leaving the door open when not in use... but I think we have similar issue that requires taking the thing apart.

One and a half spoons of Vanish in the washing, and instead of fabric softener, a good shot of concentrated vinegar.

Solved all my issues with weird odour.

1) With my nose. Usually, I bring things closer to my nose to get the specific aroma I'm interested in. It localizes the aroma better.

2) Rather nice at the moment, thanks. I have recently had to start using hand lotion a lot, and at the moment I smell like Bath and Body Works' "Sensuous Amber" lotion. Not bad. I also had a shower recently after spending several hours outdoors in the sun. Between copious sweat and plenty of extra-fine dust (it's really limestony around here, so dust is very fine and powdery), I needed to shower to be able to put up with my own odor.

3) Sometimes having a decent sense of smell is useful at work, and other times, not so much. And in between it's often "useful but not enjoyable." I work in a rehab hospital; we have patients who are not well enough to go home once they're no longer sick enough to stay in a general hospital. They have wounds, skin issues, digestive problems, and so on. Sometimes the particular odor of a healthy, healing wound is not present, but rather a different odor... Not a good thing to smell. Nor is the way skin smells when someone has too many folds and it's hard to clean them. Nor the way it smells when a patient who had been on significant pain meds is no longer constipated. So at the moment, home and noticing the lotion I'm wearing, I'm pretty happy about my sense of smell.

My old family recipe is some white vinegar and a cup of smooth peanut butter. It is a great combination, the peanut oils will remove all odours from your clothes for sure.

My body smells good (EDIT: maybe). I like my cologne.

However, my wife tells me that my nose-breath smells like "batteries." Sinus issues.

She has a great way of describing smells.

We can't go into many stores because they smell like hamster cages.
