Why not an "Apple Space Agency" or "i-NASA"?

many computer and web billionaires have already invested in their own space companies (PayPal's Elon Musk, Amazon's Jeff Bezos, Microsoft's Paul Allen, etc.) so, WHY don't Apple start (also) its own Space company?
thanks to the iPod and iPhone success, Apple has over $18 billion cash in its pockets (that exceeds the annual NASA budget!) so, it has enough money to found a Space company, or (maybe) buy NASA... and call it " NASA 2.0" or " i-NASA"...

Apple products are expensive enough.
Nice dream though.

PayPal's Elon Musk has invested about $100M to develop its Falcon-1 rocket and launch two of them (with no success, so far)
Apple has over $18 billion CASH in its pockets, so, 5% of this money should be enough to start a BIG space company!

*sigh*
What a load of crap.
Why would *any* investor in Apple wanna pay for that kind of excentric hobby ?

Agreed. As much as I like the space program, I'd rather see apple invest its financial resources in improving their products. I'm pretty damn sure the investors feel the same.

it's not an hobby, the suborbital flights for tourists should be a good business from 2010 with thosands tickets sold at $200,000 each
NASA has already funded SpaceX and Orbital with over $500M to develop commercial crew and cargo capsules for the ISS
the Space may become a very rich business in the next decade also for private companies (and just add that, for NASA and ESA contractors, the Space ALREADY IS a very rich business!)
Apple may develop good innovations in this field and (maybe) add a bit of creativity
also, I did not suggest Apple to invest ALL its financial results in this field, but just a mere 5% leaving 95% to develop their core-business' products
after all, Microsoft seems invest in some Genoma research projects (that, surely, is not a Microsoft core-business...)

because it would look great. fly well. accomplish it's mission better than NASA but be intent on being the underdog and find too much of its identity in not being NASA (though it would also launch NASA rockets if asked through a program called LAUNCHcamp).

Along that line, Apple should build cars, household appliances, power tools, houses, exercise equipment, kitchen utensils, outdoor gear, commuter trains, power plants, ships etc.
Apple, WTF ? Why are you holding us back ?

I believe some of them my become real, especially the electric cars
after all, Clive Sinclair (the inventor of the Sinclair ZX80, ZX81, ZX Spectrum and QL) has already attempted to do that (but failed) in 1985 with the Sinclair C5

You have a weird way of trying to convince me of your views by posting facts that actually promote what I'm saying.

You fail to see that Apple is merely expanding in one Segment - consumer electronics.
The only deviation from that is the iTunes Store, which is actually a new segment - media retail.

And even that ties to their iPod and Computer nicely.

And why would apple waste its resources on something that is so far away from its stated purpose and focus. They have 18 billion because they have a focused vision and they piss the money away on lame brain ideas. Space exploration is lame, but asking why apple isn't spending its money on space travel is.

why? 23 years ago there was not the technology to make a good electric car, that's why Sinclair failed

"cooperate" (or, maybe, "compete") with NASA in a space program give big PRESTIGE (that ALWAYS means "more business") ... after all, the Apple products are not SO different from PCs but they sell good and at higher prices thanks to the Apple prestige (its "look and feel") ... so, gather a so large extra-prestige investing just 5% of its cash (NOT its full financial resources) surely IS a very good business for Apple!

I'm so glad people like you are not running Apple.
