I don't know Unix all that much, if it all... so I was wondering where can I find applications for Xll and how do you actually run them?
My basic question is how do I use X11 and besides for Unix development, what can I use it for.
I installed X11, tried to download some applications, but that's where I get stuck. How do you run applications with X11, etc..

Do a search here. There were a couple of threads on the best applications. In general though you'll just play around with them. Typically most people don't need the apps.
To install them, install fink and then use it to install gnome and kde.

The best source for X11 applications is fink ( http://fink.sourceforge.net), which is an application that finds, downloads, and installs Unix apps automatically. At macupdate.com you can find a nice GUI for it called FinkCommander.
Most X11 apps are not very useful for the average Mac user, but there are a few exceptions. If you don't already have Photoshop, Gimp is a very fine program. If you don't have Microsoft Office, OpenOffice (available from macupdate.com) is an nice alternative (better in some ways than Appleworks). Bluefish is a pretty decent html editor, Pan a fairly nice newsreader.
