How many extended desktops does a macbook support and if more than one, how would one do the connectivity.

I think he's talking about external displays.

I already have one extended display (monitor) and would like to add another one. That would give me a total of three displays to work from.

It can't do it unless you get some third party thing. Also, the total screen res will have to be below a certain amount as the macbook can only copy with a 23" external monitor maximum. If you were to have two externals, you might need to continuously have your macbook screen off all the time, so then only the two externals are on, so it works as a desktop. But yeah, you'll need some third party stuff to split the dvi into two separate signals.

It's not really worth it on a MacBook. For more than two displays you want a Mac Pro.

Matrox's DualHead2Go/TripleHead2Go is an option, however it comes with various limitations.
