I recently did some farm upgrades, and I'm sure others have too.
So, whatcha got?

Other then a few minor changes, and some overclocking, the above is my farm until mid July (assuming current plans don't change). So now you know what it takes to pass me. Of course, after July...

Well I recently sold my PowerMac 800 and Celeron 1300, but what is left is:

iBook 600
Athlon 1900+
Athlon 2400+
Pentium P4 3.0 ghz
Athlon 2500+ @ 2054mhz

The 2500+ is an upgraded 1900 box that almost makes up for the two I no longer have.

Now I can save up for that G5.....

I picked up a 2600 today, it's going to replace a 2200, which is going to replace the 2000, which is going to replace the tbird 1.2.

The G5 is tweaked with regards to OS X: I removed a few unused protocols from the system and gained ~100mb more free ram + now have fewer threads running. This sucker is cranking out 5.56 units a day.

Hmmm.... should be doing better than that... Are you running 2 CLI versions? Seti's not multi-processor aware. I'd heard people were getting 2-2.5 hrs per w/u per processor. You should be getting 10 or 12 a day out of that box, at least. I get 6 a day (+/-) running two versions of the CLI client on my dual gig G4.

Put a separate version of the client in a separate folder, so you've got something like this:

/Applications/Seti/setiathome
/Applications/Seti2/setiathome

Then run them both with SetiDockling.

Will try. I already noticed that my daily rate is up to 6.5 units from 5.56 and it's been less than 24hrs since the switch. (And I've been using the G5 for actual work today.)

Running two clients at once will essentially double your output, since each client only uses one CPU. Watch your CPU monitor with one client, then two clients running.

This is interesting - one SETI client uses 35-45%, while the other uses 140%.

When only one client is running, the load is about 50-95%.
Any idea where the 140% is coming from, if SETI is not MP aware/capable?
No big deal, just curious.

So far, total output is 11 units per day.

Weird? When I run top, it shows two clients, each with about 90-95% CPU. Maybe the motherboard/controller set-up is different enough on the G5's that the OS automatically distributes the work differently? I really have no clue.

I manage a few Mac OS X servers doing LDAP authentication and home directory serving as well, so I could potentially install some stuff on them if they don't affect the load too much. Anyone in a similar situation? Could I just nice them down to 0 or something so that they are not greedy at all with the folding CPU time?

I run it on a couple web servers no problems, but I run it at nice 19 (the lowest priority).

I just tested logging a few clients into the machine via OpenLDAP (where their home directories are stored on the server) and using the machine itself for administration purposes. I didn't notice any slowdowns, so it looks like fah isn't being too greedy. Good.

Farms are fun! I just got a new PC workstation here at work. The old PC was a PIII 500mhz with 384 RAM, this new one is a new Dell 2.6 Ghz Celeron with 512 RAM. There are some trickles happening here in our department and my supervisor is getting a dualie G5 soon, so his Mirrored Drive Door 1ghz will go to me and replace this 733 Quicksilver. If I can't shake these Tinkers I'll sure give them a run for their money...

UPDATE II: Threw together a 2.1GHz/333MHz FSB/2600+ Athlon XP with 512MBs of RAM and I've gone back to SETI@Home.

The G4, at 1.4GHz, is doing WUs is a smidgen under 6 hours per processor. The Athlon XP is doing them in under 4 hours.
