Yep, but they do say that the G5 operates better with the sidepanel on, because zone 4 (top of the case) has nothing to guide the airflow with the side off ... but I have'nt noticed any problems, or any parts getting hotter because I don't have the side on.

I really like the clean look of the inside of the G5, main reason why I leave the side off. My ex-pc is a total mess inside, and I remember spending hours and hours to try and clean it up, get rid of all the cables etc. The G5 came came all clean like that, so I say why not enjoy the view ?

(This is the first I've heard of it.)
My side panel is still on, but only because my tower is on the floor with the "shiney" side facing my desk... :-(

So what's the point of having the clear plastic thing in the first place? When the G5s first came out, I thought Apple people were talking about how they added that specifically so you could run it with the door off and still have the cooling system work.

1 year after it came out I haven't seen anyone who has had problems running the computer with just the plastic door.

They must be.

Why otherwise would it make sense to make a see-through internal cover? Or was is solely done for the purpose of showing off the PowerMac's internals at expos while it isn't running?

The design is so that the side panel and internal clear plastic work together to guide the airflow through the case. They recommend you use both for optimal performance of the cooling system. In the manual they make a clear distiniction between 'side panel' and 'clear plastic' thingy ...

Of course it is to show off the internals, why do you think they make such awesome heatsinks, or why the case is so clean inside ? Every G5 I see at an Apple Store has the side panel off ...

So they mean just the metal door then right?

I think they do ... try removing the plastic cover when using your G5 : fans will go full speed ! This doesn't happen with the side panel off.

My local Apple stores NEVER take the side panels off. I tried to do it once to show a friend and I was yelled at LOUDLY by the sales drone.

It's ok, some of us PowerMac users wouldn't mind having a PowerMac for our "on the go" trips. (I currently suffer with a 2002 Dell Inspiron) <GRIN>

Great setup indeed. Wish I had the money last year to buy an HD 23 inch instead of the 20 inch I picked up. At least the 20 is good as a secondary display.

I get asked that a lot.... that's a Casablanca brand table fan... they make several models from floor to large and small table. They also make ceiling fans which adorn my house. Casablanca is basically the Rolls Royce (or Apple) of Fans.... the thing is built like they used to be, solid and all but silent, and made in the USA!

thanks, and no, nothing of that sort (yet)... I wonder if that is due to a color sync being needed on the monitor... you should look into that option.

I think you mean SWEET ride! And that's an awesome fan BTW.

Here's my ex-Power Tower with most of the guts stripped out. Using OS9 Helper I upgraded it from 8.6 to 9.2.2 on a different HD, and am now installing an otherwise unused Ultra SCSI card and CD-R/W drive.

Note also the all powerful Voodoo 1 card!

Wow, a 240? The one above's a 180, the 2nd fastest one they had at the time. Sonnet sells 400MHz G3 upgrades for US$70, which ain't bad! Running 8.6 with no VM and Speed Doubler, it's still pretty usable.

when compared to earlier 23" and 20" models there is a slight magenta hue to the new 23" Al. according to MANY it cant be fixed with calibration. some say it can - others call BS, saying it can't -- that its a very specific hardware/engr problem with the 23" caused by the lamps being direcly behind the display instead of on top...

theres also THIS article

http://www.mac360.com/index.php/mac3...nema_displays/

do a search over at macrumors for more info about the dreaded pink tint.

i for one am completely turned off of even attempting to purchase a 23" Al until this is resolved once and for all.

Wow. US$300 for a fan (average price I saw on Froogle). It better be a good performer.

I move to the new house in two weeks. I'll have pics of the news set-up then. Replacing the desk and hopefully the monitor with an Apple 20".

And nice set-up blakespot.

Best $300 you'll ever spend. It's the Rolls Royce of fans... nothing you'll find at Restoration Hardware or Home Depot will touch it.

I also placed a bunch of their ceiling fans in the house we just built, silent and well made, best out their.

Good luck.

Oooh, that Nu monitor looks nice. How is it? Have you tried the built-in speakers? How are they?

I really like that design. Damn, it's VGA, huh? At least it has a 16ms pixel response. Hmmm ... now that or a Samsung 172x. Hard to beat $270 for a slick monitor like that, though.

Yes, I absolutley love the monitor. It's my first LCD, and got it from NewEgg. The clarity is unbelievable (500:1 contrast), and it looks better than DVI quality. I think NU actually uses LG screens. No dead pixels, and has almost no distortion from any angle. I haven't tried the speakers, but I'm sure thier just ment for alert sounds. Great buy!!

They are pretty nice. Bass could be better, but the sound that comes out'a them little things is crazy. I read somewhere online someone broke a glass cup with them!

Do you own a NeXT Cube?!?
Here are most of my computer posters:

The NeXT poster (again)
Another shot of the NeXT poster
Picasso Mac Poster
Blue&White G3 Poster
Amiga Dev Con Poster
Amiga Shakespeare Poster (another pic)
Not a poster, but wall-oriented goodness!!

Got them either on eBay or RedLightRunner. The NeXT poster was $100.

I do not have a Cube but I do have a NeXTStation Turbo Color. See pics of it (and some other systems I've had) at my List page. I am currently on the hunt for a particular "We See Farther" game poster from Electronic Arts circa 1983.

Cheers.

It was a G4/G5 stand on rollers I got from MacMice - but it looks like they don't sell it any longer.
