Who'd be flying over Calgary today in a DC-10 with an escort of 6 F-22s heading NW?

Ahhhh ... that makes sense. Probably heading up to CFB Cold Lake, then. It's not often that fighters are seen around here, and usually then only F-18s flying 1-by-1. Seeing 6 F-22s in formation around a DC-10 was more than a little unusual (particularly when they were all spitting out contrails ... which I wasn't able to photograph in time

I think you can even make out the refueling boom in the first photo. Great pictures.

Thanks! I was scrambling to replace my wide angle with my telephoto before they passed overhead. It was pretty spectacular when they were all streaming contrails.

That indeed is a KC10 tanker. The giveaway is the boom, which can be seen in the first picture connecting to the F22 directly behind the tanker.
Now why they'd be flying over Calgary, I haven't a clue, but that's a mid-air refueling setup, very much by the book.

It might just be the angle, but it looks like the Raptor to the rear of the KC-10 is in the process of topping off. Nice catch!

It's a white gold DC-10 and the resurrected L. Ron Hubbard.

Could be Omega's KDC-10 rather than a "real" KC-10.

Nice capture. Most likely on their way home to Elmendorf.

Very true. L. Ron has been publishing regularly since the 1950s. Maybe he's metabolically challenged lately, but he's hardly dead...

I hadn't thought of Elmendorf, but that's a very strong possibility.

Looks like Elmendorf is home to some F-22s (6, in 2007).

Those are CFA-18s, not F-22s. The F-18 is long and skinny where the F-22 has more of a boxy shape when viewed from below. Still a great shot!

They look pretty boxy to me. The wings, in particular, appear "rounded" like the F-22 and not at all like the F-18, and the tail appears to have a "cut-out" where the tailplanes extend beyond the engine as on the F-22.
See the side-by-side comparison in the middle below:

They are definitely F-22s. No doubt about it.

My apologies! I just got to access the the full size image and they're definitely Raptors.
You'd think with all the planes I've photographed over the years I'd be immune to making rookie mistakes

In my flickr comment feed, a local pilots says that while he was flying in the area the Calgary Terminal informed him that there was a flight of 6 Raptors and a DC10 passing through the area.

Accepted. Besides you should have noted no canopies painted on the bellies.
