From time to time while responding to posters, I notice that their usernames take on a personality of their own in my mind. I've come across certain usernames and I wonder how on earth they came up with that handle? Most of the time they're just silly names, but sometimes it's clear they mean something specific that I might not be aware of.

Mine is simple. ebuddy is "electronic buddy". Everything was 'e' something when I chose it as my email names several years back; i.e. ebay, email, ecommerce, etrade, etc... so I figured what the heck, I'll be everybody's ebuddy.

My town was built around railroading. The local high school's mascot(s) is the Railroader.

I love the sound of a train going down the tracks. Which is a very good thing because at any given time I can hear one from my house.

Considering I registered when I was essentially young and stupid (I was 13 at the time), I was considerably more militant about the supremacy of the Mac...

...at this point, considering I make my living being a lab tech who programs in C++ on a PC to run highly custom psychophysical testing hardware, I really don't care.

Don't try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

My friends nicknamed me Jawbone. There wasn't much of a reason for it. It has nothing to do with my appearance, from what I understand. Just a dumb nickname that stuck.

What's funny about this is that Gossamer linked to the other "what's your handle thread" and the same thing was said there.

I will say when this thread pops up from time to time, different people respond.

But if you're aware of a similar thread in existence, you are infinitely more leet if you can point it out for everyone to see.

I honestly didn't even look to see if there was. I was ashamed to see it as recent as July. It was also cool to see the participants of that thread. Although, I'm now looking for what "leet" means.

I liked the way the Russian officer in Red October called the American officer a cowboy.

The American officer was tough, but not mean. He was there to get the job done.

I've been participating in the forums since 1999. I used to do it under my own name, and I used it back in the days when you didn't need to be registered to post on the forums.

Then in 2000 I started using Person Man (albeit in unregistered form) for a while, and then when they changed the forums so you had to be registered to post I registered under the name.

Yes, I got it from the They Might Be Giants' song Particle Man. I chose it because "Person Man" just sounds like a generic person. I didn't want to call attention to myself.

I plan on keeping this name. No gimmicky retirements, no changing nicks to avoid bans, no changing just to change, etc. Just Person Man. (Besides, at this rate, I won't hit 10,000 posts until about 2023 or so).

An asian guy shouted out my name in the middle of class and completely botched it, causing 60 people to look at me. He then walked off. This name is a short approximation of what he shouted.

I was a junior in high school when we did the musical 'Camelot' in theatre. I played a bit part, Castor of Cornwall. In the show, I was knighted. I liked the whole thing for a bit, so i kept it.

A nick-name I got from a friend back in 1996/97. The "dc" is for my initials and where I (used to) live. The "macdaddy" is for my kick-ass skills as all-around Mac guru. And, coming from the friend who gave me the appellation, it is also an ironic acknowledgement of my incredible lack of hipness, hipness with which the term "macdaddy" is often associated.

When I was in high school during 1997, I liked this girl named Nadia. I totally had the hots for her, but she didn't, so the letter "n" is in her name when i first used AOL which i had to make up a screen name. At which time pager codes were very popular in the US, so page codes were very popular. The numbers "8236" stands for..............can anyone guess? It's pretty ez if u were in that era

Ever since, I've been using it. Some lady i talked to once thought I was a pilot because they apparently had the same type of email naming.

My first username on here was simply my name + the letter for the "rank" in the fireteam in the SAF. Nickname that stuck.

Second username was an old family name from 200-300 years back.

This one was simply made up because it sounded good.

My first user name was taken from the name of a local company who prints stationary for me. A long time back, Compuserve asked me for a username. Invoice from this company was on my desk, so there ya go.

My current username... ...I'd just finished watching a film.

I really liked the flamethrower in Marathon, so a gamer tag it is. And a fondness for AD2000 comics had something to do with it, too.

Who doesn't?

In any case, I think the reason behind choosing my name is quite obvious....

I decided to change my username from one that contained my real name a few years ago. I couldn't choose Mr. Met because my head wasn't big enough to do that name justice, so I chose the next best thing.
