I was just going through my hard-drive making some space (getting rid of apps and files that I no longer use), and I saw that Keynote takes up just over 1gb. Anybody know why it's such a space hog?

The entire MS Office Suite comes in at 500mb while Photoshop runs under 400mb.

In fact, alot of the Apple apps seem quite bloated in size; Pages is no lightweight at just under 900mb, iWeb is 300mb, iPhoto at 500mb?

I have no idea as Keynote 2 is only 216MB in size (support files not inclusive). One possible reason for bloat is the presence of HD templates (which, due to their resolution, are going to be a lot bigger than the 800x600 and 1024x768 standard templates). The other reasons, I suspect will be the universal binary nature of the application and international support.

Templates. That's what makes all of the iApps huge.

Huge, but cool... The templates do take a lot of space, but also give you some great design ideas and guidelines.

It doesn't really matter. Another app would just put all of its required files (like Adobe does, my Adobe folder in App support is +1GB) in another location (like Application Support) while the iApps all put it in one bundle.

Yeah, it's the templates with all the themes and things of that nature.

Cool. Thanks for the info everyone. I've removed all of the templates I don't see myself using.

Actually, the templates themselves don't take up anywhere close to that full 1 GB. They've duplicated the templates in each localized language version. Delete the languages you don't use and you'll delete the bulk of the extra space. The same goes for Pages.

Noticed that. Removed the multiple languages as well.

Could removing languages possibly interfere with future system or software updates ?

Unlikely. If they did, you could always reinstall them.

I've just archived everything on a couple of DVDs. Between all the iApps, I've opened up several gigs of space
