Upgrading an iPhone to 3.0 is pretty much a no-brainer, since it's free for iPhones and adds a lot of features benefiting iPhone owners.

But, I don't see all that much in 3.0 that's enough of a benefit to me as a Touch user to convince me to drop $10 for it. Anybody here planning on upgrading their Touch?

It's ten dollars! What were you going to spend it on? Two beers?

If you are an 2G iPod touch user it will enable Bluetooth.

Sure, it's only $10. But, I don't really much benefit for Touch users beyond bluetooth. And, even then, I can't see how bluetooth will be of much benefit to Touch user either. Why spend $10 on something that does nothing for me?

In Game Voice? 1000 new APIs? Developers will soon release games that REQUIRE 3.0. There will be no choice but to upgrade.

The real benefit isn't what 3.0 brings to the end user - those are rather minor and some (ignorants) would say obvious updates, it's what it enables developers to do. Much like Snow Leopard.

I was referring to the bluetooth. There has to be more than just games.

Of course. There's also file transfer, contacts exchange and A2DP.

I have an iPhone, so it's a no-brainer like you said.

However, if I had the touch, I'd still consider it a no-brainer at 10 bucks. Just the cut and paste alone is enough to warrant it.

Plus, as mentioned above, in time, the 3.0 OS will basically be required if you want to run anything new.

Yea, cut/paste is worth it alone.
Apps will require 3.0.
Bluetooth getting unlocked.
All the other features which really benefit the iPhone will also still benefit the touch a lot as well.

Now, I heard there was going to be a new local filesharing app built in as well?
I have returned... 2020 MacBook Air - 1.1 GHz Quad-Core i5 - 16 GB RAM

For sure I will. I don't like being begin technology-wise, although I think I'll Jailbreak the Touch

even if apple was going to charge 10 bucks for iPhone owners, I'd say it was a no brainer. I mean all of the functionality they're offering is well worth the 10 dollars. Bottom line is if you don't think its a good deal, don't do it. No one is twisting your arm.

Of course, I'll have to consider 3.0 if an App I want requires it. Until then, I just don't see the value, for myself. I did the same thing when Apple charged iTouch users $20 for the original Apps; waited a few months and got the Apps and 2.0 for $10.

I understand the desire for some to have cut&paste, though I've never really felt the need myself.
As for Bluetooth, I should have specified that I'm running a 1st Gen Touch, so there's no sell there for me either.

I guess I was just wondering if there was anything I was missing. Generally found myself underwhelmed by this release.

- Push services
- Control accessories through the dock connection
- Landscape mode on all apps (I can finally view my email widescreen!)
- Email more than one photo at a time
- Sync Notes/Calendars/and possibly ToDo lists

Those five features right there is easily worth $10.

Slick shoes?! Are you crazy?!

Nice features, but I'd still argue that they're of more interest to iPhone users than iTouch users

- Push services
iPhone: only valuable when you're always connected; iTouches aren't always connected

- Control accessories through the dock connection
Interesting only when such accessories appear

- Landscape mode on all apps (I can finally view my email widescreen!)
I would've been all over this months ago, but only for the keyboard in Mail, and lately I'm finding I prefer to type one-handed in portrait mode than two-handed in landscape

- Email more than one photo at a time
iPhone: only valuable when you're device takes pictures. How often do people need to email *any* pictures from their iTouch.

- Sync Notes/Calendars/and possibly ToDo lists
Apple took too long to get this out. I'm already syncing notes wirelessly with NotePad and Calendars with Gmail's Exchange service.

Yeah, I really don't get the hoopla about wide keyboard:

1) It's easier to type on the portrait one despite smaller keys thanks to clever scaling of target areas.
2) You get virtually NO actual space for your message.

But I guess if you have monster hands... *shrug*

Not sure if I will yet (1st gen user here as well). Not much in this update that I find very compelling.

I'm considering putting the touch up on eBay along with the case I have for it, then pay the difference out-of-pocket for a 2nd gen model.

I guess it depends on where you live, work, study, etc.

I have an iPhone so push would be active for me 99% of the time. However, even if I had the touch, push would be active more than 75% of the time, since I have wireless at home and I have wireless at work too.

Push email is a good middleground for me. I don't like IM because it's not universal, and it's a little too connected for my tastes. Push email is OK, because there's less urgency. There's no real obligation for instant replies, but I can read any responses immediately, that is if I want to, and I don't have to log-in as being "online".

I do tend to write faster on landscape mode. It resembles more a regular keyboard than in portray mode.

Read my comment again. I was talking about VIEWING email in widescreen mode. How many times have you received an email containing a wide graphic or picture and was force to scroll side to side just to read the damn text at a readable size?

I can hear the cries already. ...But $10 is just too darn expensive. It's gonna break my bank account. I'm being robbed blind by Apple. Since when did the Mafia take over Apple? Say, what!...$10 for an upgrade for features that should have been included in Software 1.0. Woohoo.

I just love it. Weird. I just went to Burger King, grabbed a couple Angus Burgers and large fries and it came to about $10. I walked away eager to eat my fill of beef. And I didn't even curse at the cashier. Easy come, easy go.
