For certain models of the iBook there is a hack that turns the video mirroring into dual monitor, I was wondering if there is a hack that would do the same for my 800 G4 eMac?

Any suggestions?

The iBook's video card is meant to use multiple displays, it's just that Apple disabled the feature so you'll buy a PowerBook if you want the feature enough. I don't believe the video card in the eMac is cable of anything except mirroring.

Actually, based on what I've heard, the hack for the Radeon 7500 does indeed work with both the iBook and the eMac. I don't know where to find it, and it is still beta, so you're on your own.

I've used the standard iBook dual head firmware hack from erstweiner? on my eMac.

Works without any probelms for both monitor spanning and mirroring. My eMac is the current (May 2003) 800MHz model with the ATi Radeon 7500 (32Mb video Ram).

For anyone who has done this hack, could you tell me what resolutions are available for the second monitor?

I want to see how the eMac will mesh with my 1280x1024 17" LCD monitor.

Thanks.

If it is the same firmware hack as the ibook, there should be some info on the forums, I'll see if I can dig up the page for you.
I'll try it out on my new 1GHz eMac sometime in the future when I get the display cable.

Sweet! As soon as these things were announced, I proposed the question. (Seeing as they have the same graphics card as the iBook) Glad to see it works. Just want to know now what resolutions are available.

Just tried the hack on my 1GHz supedrive eMac (of the latest rev -- 32MB Radeon 7500) and it works as advertised. Can't tell you what resolutions are available on the external as I only have a 15" LCD on which to try it, but on that I get the full 1024x768 that the display is capable of with millions of colors on both internal and external display. Quartz Extreme is active on both displays. Neat!

So the hack also works on the iMac 17 1ghz right? It has a gforce4 though and not a Radeon. Before I attempt someone say they've done it to success...

I am with Matthew_M. I posted a thread on this forum asking about anyone using the monitor spanning hack on 1ghz iMacs. People are looking but I haven't heard from anyone has tried it. I know I am being a wimp to let some one else test the waters for us. Someone out there has to have less regard for running with scissors and warranties than me.

Out.
f8 and be there...

There is no hack (and there never will be) for anything with a 2MX.

Only the iMacs with 4MXs and eMacs/iBooks with Radeon 7500s can be hacked.

Could it be possible to replace the 2MX in my eMac 800 with a card that supports dual monitor hack, or is it built onto the motherboard? (I'm guessing motherboard.)

instead of starting a new thread, i will do the responsible thing-

i know there has been a revision or two since this thread- but does the spanning hack still work? i looked around, but did not get a solid answer.

i have it working on my ibook and i love it, but a client of mine is getting an emac (instead of upgrading her beige ) and i am a little uneasy about this as i will not there all the time to support this.

any first hand experience with this and the latest revision? specifically the 1.25ghz with the combo drive?

thank y'all.
