With all this talk about the new 970's hopefully headed towards the mac, 64bitness and all, and Panther on the horizen. What's after OSX?
Will they keep what's under the hood and go with an all new GUI? Or a new improved OS to fully hit up the 970 for all it's juice? I know we are talking a few years out here, but OS's don't get coded overnight. Any ideas?

after 10.3? Probably 10.4... if anything should have been os xi ...it would have been jaguar.

why wouldnt panther handle the 970s?

btw, why do you need all that crap in your sig? it is longer than your post... mostly unecessary.

Define "a new improved OS" please. Are you talking about the similar jump from OS9 to OSX?

If so, I don't see a reason why they should do it. OSX is designed to live for more than 10 years. The architecture is very flexible comparing to OS9

Steve himself said that OS X was designed to the Mac into the next decade, therefore, it'll be around for quite some time.

Thought 10.0 was codenamed cheetah, ironically enough.

They'll take OS X straight through 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 ... 10.9 is my guess, and then they'll either do "Mac OS X 2.0," "Mac OS 11," or some new naming scheme.

I've also heard that Apple might drop version numbers completely, instead leaving us with names like "Mac OS X Panther," "Mac OS X Jaguar," etc, which can go on virtually forever.

EDIT: Or Apple might go out of business before then

(they've only been "proudly going out of business" since 1985, after all).

If we keep moving along the same rollout model, then OS X will indeed last about 10 years. And by then, I'll bet Apple comes up with another clever marketing scheme for the next version of the Mac OS (11).

And I don't see why Panther won't be able to handle the 970's. If not the initial 10.3, then a 10.3.x update could bring us up to par (if needed).

If we are using Mac OS X 10.2.6 now, why would we go to Mac OS X 2.0? Wouldn't that be a step in the wrong direction?

I could see Mac OS X 11.0 but that would be stupid.

I predict in at least 5 years (or when the 10.x runs out), the whole "X is cool" thing will have been copied so many times by other companies that it won't be cool anymore. That's when Apple will reveal Mac OS 11. I can almost see how the 11 will look now...it would be almost like this very font, but bigger. It'll have no shininess, no 3d curves, ooo sounds kickass!

What's wrong with Mac OS X 10.10? That's not a decimal point, it never was - having versions like 10.2.6 should show that.

It's easier outside the US, because we use the (ISO standard) decimal comma. The point doesn't stop some people from pronouncing versions like ten comma two comma six, however, so maybe we're not better off after all...

I think name-wise we are eventually headed towards a windoze-esque scheme. Named after things not numbers....We are already starting to see hints of this with the added emphasis of "Jaguar", "Panther" etc...

The beleaguered Mac maker will never get the chance to release Mac OS 11, because they will be out of business by the end of the decade.

In fact, I predict that Apple will go under by the year 2000.

whoever came up with the decimal point comma should be SHOT. its horrible and looks ugly.

By the time OS XI, 11, or whatever comes out, artificial intelligence will have truely emerged and your Mac will be insulted if you call it an "operating system". Every Mac will have his/her own unique name (and I'm not talking IP numbers here).
