I've tried installing xFree 86 for darwin under OS X. I keep getting an error that I need to "download the 'extract' (or 'extract.exe') utility and put it in the same directory" as the rest of the files to be installed. The extract utility is in there but I keep getting the same error (I even tried the extract.exe with no luck). I downloaded all the Darwin specific files for this install to my HD but I keep getting stuck at this point.

Can anyone out there lend a helping hand before I chuck all these files in the Trash?

Create a seperate directory on your hard drive and place all xfree86 related files in it, and retry the installation.

Dependig on how you downloaded it, you may need
to fix the permissions on execute. It needs to be
'executable'. chmod 755 extract

Yeah, they're already in a seperate directory on my HD. No joy though.

Eh? I'm pretty much a newbie to this UNIX stuff so if you could explain that to me like I'm a 6 year old that would be much appreciated Thanks.

If I recall correctly, (it's been a while since I read about it) the extract script is has been renamed with a .exe extension simply to avoid its being munged during download. I think the procedure is to rename the file extract. (without the .exe extension) Also, as pointed out, make sure it has execute permissions by cd'ing (in the terminal) to the directory containing the downloaded .tar.gz files. Then execute:

chmod 755 extract

The extract script extracts any .tar.gz file in the current working directory, which I assume to be the reason for keeping the downloaded files in a separate directory. You should now be able to continue with the install as advertised. HTH
