A Mac-related job opening came about here at NC State, so I nervously applied...I was the last person the guy interviewed, and I didn't know how well it really went...well today I got an email that I got the position!

I'm so excited...I'll be the NC State "DV Consultant"! The brand new Digital Media Lab is all mine! Haha, the lab they have here in insane...over 25 Dual G4 PowerMacs in a lab w/ 20" Planar LCDs, all loaded w/ FCP & the works. Then, there's the central DV lab, my new home! It's got a DP G4 PowerMac w/ a 23" + 17" Apple LCDs (ironically, the SAME setup I have here in my dorm room!) w/ tons of LaCiE FW drives, DV-to-analog (and vice-versa) converters, and $10,000 handheld digicams! My job is to aid project-workers on their FCP, iMovie, and other Apple software projects in that lab...needless to say I'm floored that as a freshman that I got this spot. It's paying extremely decent cash for a job that I can reach in a 5 minute walk, have no gas or mileage on my car to pay for, and that doesn't tie up my weekends.

I meet w/ the boss Friday for hours setup and such, and will hopefully start in the next week or two. I'm pretty nervous b/c I'm not an FCP pro, but I'm way excited...just thought I'd share my excitement!

And BTW, the whole lab was created Dec. 2002, thus the G4s instead of G5's...but they'll get upgraded soon enough, and for now, Dualie G4's still are nothing to sneeze at in dual-proc. aware apps. like FCP4.

Congrats! I just got a job at my college too as a Macintosh technician.

It's the best, hope you have a really cool boss. Mine's a mac freak like me, his office has Apple stickers EVERYWHERE (and I mean everywhere.) My clipboard alone has like 5 Apple stickers all over it.

Congrats. Maybe being around all sorts of expensive equipment with solid industrial design will make you realize how atrocious those rims you have really are.

Thanks everybody!!! I'm so excited to start!

And I'm so thankful I got this as a freshman, I just hope the road gets better from here 'cause this is a great start!

And Ca$h...though I guess it doesn't really matter, someone broke into that Explorer you love to bash on 2 weeks ago and raided my stereo setup so thanks to modern day theives I've been forced to remove the rims while up here at school.

Heh, yeah, it's a total blessing to have landed this position...here's just a couple pics of the wonderful workplace I get to be at!

This pic is the actual Final Cut Pro/Audio-Video Lab where I get to spend my time

And this is the outer lab where students and faculty scan photos, make Acrobat docs, etc.

And the photos were taken on the lab's 5MP Nikon digicam...sweeet

congrats! it is good to be able to work on macs. i sometimes feel quite sorry for those who post here saying they're using a windoze box at work. fancy having to wrestle with that POS every day, just to pay the rent.

so far in my computer related 'career' i've been quite lucky:

my first job was graphic design for a software company - using macs.

my second was as a designer for a software company which was 100% PC when i arrived. mine was a new position so they had to buy me a comp to work on. i basically told them it had to be a mac or i wouldn't be able to do the job, and they went along with it. ironically, the next two designers they took on after me didnae 'stand up for their rights' and ended up having to do graphic design on [wait for it!] tiny computer PCs [aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggghhhh!]

now i work part-time for my old college teaching each new intake of students on the multimedia courses the rudiments of flash/dreamweaver/cinema4D. and last year we got funding to run a special course, which i led, to introduce traditional arts and craftspeople to working with digital technology. it was quite cool getting a class full of computer virgins up and running with the mac OS, digital photography, scanning and intro-ing various software packages in the space of a couple of weeks. needless to say, if i hadn't been teaching them on macs, we'd probably still have been tearing ourt hair out over installing and configuring the various drivers and 'dlls' by the time the course finished!

Heh...the desk in that upper pic is made by the same folks who made all the equipment in the IT office where I work. I'm sittin' in front of one now.

APW/Wrightline makes good stuff, don't they? Seriously - you could walk around on top of this desk (I have, in fact).

Nice! I wish my school had a setup like that. I'm currently in a video production class so I have keys to the editing rooms. It's all G4s (MDDs and QuickSilvers), but we only have 17" LCDs! It's so frustrating having to work on a single, small screen.

Fortunately, I just ordered my G5 today, so I'll be able to do all my editing at home once it comes.

White balance! Set it properly and the blue will go. Unless of course everything does really look blue when you're standing there. Well done on the job anyway.

Network security on an all Mac network?
I think a monkey could do security if nothing was Windows. Write 40-50 AppleScripts to make sure everything is maintained and check on it every 3-4 weeks to make sure there hasn't been massive hardware failures in the Xserves.

Hahaha! Sounds like my job! I'm a mac helper up here at college and I keep all the machines running smoothly (or try to). As of late though, my boss has been having me run around campus installing patches on all the Windows machines. Booo.

And congrats AssassyN. I remember when I interviewed for my job, nervous as all heck and when I got the job, I was elated. It pays really well too and the hours are absolutely great. Hope everything goes well for you!
