My girlfriend graduates from the University of Illinois at Chicago this Sunday. I don't know what to get her for a present. Any ideas? What did others get when they graduated college? She says she wants an iPod Mini, and I have one backordered, but I would like to give her something on her graduation day.

Think "engraving"... they love that crap on special days...

A nice necklace could be nice... or a photo of the two of you... a picture frame...

(I'm a cheap gift giver, so take it for what it is)

A burrito from Irazu (corner of Milwaukee and Western)

Traditional gifts include things for work (suit, briefcase, etc.), but none of those have that romantic touch. What's her degree in?

No matter what, pair the gift with the burrito...

Two steps forward (six steps back)

I got a gamecube and some games. Pretty cool if you ask me, but I had some friends that got new cars and trips to Europe... It made my present look really lame.

She's vegetarian, so I don't know about the burrito, but I'll have to checkout Irazu this weekend. It's only 3 miles from my house. She's pre-med and got a BA in Chemistry.

Just do a 11 "pink" roses and insert a card that says the #12 rose will be in the form of a pink iPodmini...

Oooh ... I was originally going to say "money" (that was always my favorite gift) until I saw that its your girlfriend. Knowing that, I'd suggest the following.

Take her on a weekend getaway somewhere. It works for almost any budget (somewhere exotic if you have loot, somewhere a few hours drive away if you don't). I can't exactly explain why, but its just always ended up being a wonderful thing with people I've dated. Even if the details of the trip end up going like utter crap for some reason, its a bonding experience -- you can laugh about how crappy everything went. Of course, I freakin' love to travel, so that probably helps the whole mood -- so YMMV if you don't care much for traveling.

gorickey wins. I mean, if you're getting her the ipod mini, you really don't have to get much. Maybe jewelry, maybe a book... but the roses and the ipod "coupon" would be excellent presentation.

Just don't get her any cross pens. That's what aunt and uncles are for!

Basically, anything that involves:
1) You spending lots of time with her (like the trip idea)
2) You spending lots of time on her (like making her something with your own hands)
3) You getting something that is completely her focused (especially something that you know she likes but you don't care for). It shows that you have "gotten to know her" likes and dislikes -- which women I've dated always seem to dig.

Apparently, the President didn't care about taking the focus off the graduates and families at Ohio State. Of course politics is involved. He is already going to win Texas, no need to be at a ceremony in that state. Where as Ohio, a battleground state, take all the free publicity he can. Gotta love politics; comes before family.

Maybe just leave this in the Political Forum.

BTW:

"Mr. Bush was invited to speak at the Ohio State commencement by representatives of the graduating class."

He was invited, and maybe he didn't want to take away from his own children's ceremony.
Who cares? This thread is about a GIFT, not some political debate you have inserted for your own selfish reasons.

Mindless anti-Bush comment...

Did you decide what you are going to get her?

An iPod mini is enough, IMO.

All my girlfriend got me for my graduation a couple years ago was that book I posted. Cute, but um, unimpressive. It was okay, my parents helped me get a new car

I got her a bracelet she had wanted...

Write her a poem or something like that, put it on a frame and give it to her.

They love that kind of silly things..

I got my grandfather's watch (one of the few things he inherited from him).

I did GoRicky's idea - with the roses and a note that an iPod Mini is on the way. I also liked Krusy's idea of taking a trip, so I told her that we could go anywhere is the U.S. for the weekend and she said New York, so I'm planning a trip. Finally, my girlfriend's current sewing machine is on its last leg. She likes to make and modify her clothes so I'm going to buy a new sewing machine.

Very nice waxcrash, she's a very lucky young lady. I hope that you will have a long lasting relationship.
