Ok, i got a 1.33 Ghz 15" yesterday and it's been a pleasure using it.

Screen is great, keyboard is excellent, etc. etc.

Some very annoying software issues though...

Mail crashes on launch
Address Book crashes on launch
all instant messenger applications that i've tried (iChat, Adium, AIM) launch but simply freeze soon afterwards.

Additionally, most of the apps/utilities i download simply refuse to work (PithHelmet, Firefox, IM apps, Azureus etc.), meaning i double click on them but they freeze or crash on launch, or never get past the splash screen.

I updated all software through Software Update, repaired/verified permissions, and deleted preference files and still nothing helps the situation. Most other apps work perfect fine, it's just these that are causing problems. Please help.

I'd suggest breaking out the hardware test cd that came with the machine as it might give you a pointer on whats wrong.

Possible problems might be faulty RAM or a bad harddisk, just occasionally a new machine gets a bad component.

If the test cd finds no issue, and you dont have any real data of your on there yet then re-install the OS and start over.

Hope you get it sorted.

If none of what FlatLyna suggested, go ahead and give AppleCare a call. That 90 days of free phone tech support will come in handy in this situation.

Well I can't possibly see how you can say that it's been a pleasure using it if most of the built in apps and downloaded apps don't work.
However I would recommend checking your ram modules. Sounds like you are getting kernel panics. Did you upgrade the ram since the purchase?
Your Mac could have shipped from the factory with bad ram.

Well, wait -- do only the applications freeze (necessitating a force quit), or does it freeze the whole computer (necessitating a restart)?

rareflares -

Before you started using the new PB, did you do a wipe & fresh OS install?

IMHO its generally a good policy to do this with a new machine.

Yes; if you do a fresh install, it pretty much forces you to go through the Welcome setup (whether you want to or not).
