OS X has been commercially released for nearly 9 months. This week Apple posted what is likely to be the last update to OS X in 2001. So...
How is OS X 10.1.2 on YOUR Mac(s) at the end of 2001?

This thread acts as an online survey to collect feedback on Stability, Speed, Features, Peripheral Support and Usage. You just copy and paste the appropriate lines from the following list into your reply and add a BRIEF explanation if required.

Stability - OS X is rock solid.
Stability - OS X has panicked (but it's OK).
Stability - OS X panics regularly.
Speed - OS X is fast and frisky.
Speed - OS X is sluggish (but it's OK).
Speed - OS X is slow.
Features - OS X has everything I need now.
Features - OS X and Classic has everything I need.
Features - OS X even w/ Classic is missing something I need.
Peripherals - OS X supports all my peripherals.
Peripherals - OS X supports my key peripherals.
Peripherals - OS X does not support a critical peripheral(s).
Usage - OS X is my only Mac OS (running 100%).
Usage - OS X w/ Classic is my primary Mac OS (running >50%).
Usage - OS X even w/ Classic is my experimental Mac OS (running <50%).

This is an opportunity for us to give the online community and Apple a collective reality check at the end of 2001.

One last thing please post just the facts -- please do not use this thread for RANTS either for or against OS X.

asxless in iLand

P.S. I left the wording of the Stability, Speed, Features, Peripheral Support items the same as I used in the "One Month Reality Check" last April so that we could compare the results. I have cross posted this this survey on three different sites so please respond in only ONE.

1 TiBook 500MHz, 512MB, 30GB running OS X 10.1.2 w/ Classic 9.2.2...

Stability - OS X is rock solid. - Since 10.1
Speed - OS X is fast and frisky. - About the same as OS 9.2.2
Features - OS X and Classic has everything I need.
Peripherals - OS X supports my key peripherals. - Some would be better w/ updated OS X specific drivers (MacAlly mouse, Snap file server)
Usage - OS X w/ Classic is my primary Mac OS (running >95%). - I still have to boot OS 9.2.2 for some backups to DVD and VPC 5.0 NetBios access.

3 G3 Macs orphaned by OS X happily running OS 9.1.

asxless in iLand

PS this reply is cross posted in all three sites as an example.

I want more speed, my USB webcam, my Microsoft mouse drivers, more system prefs (themes, more desktop picture controls)

Then it will be fine

Stability- OS X is rock solid (No complaints here. Not really that many with OS 9 though, either)

Speed- OS X is slow (Rage PRO VR Video card unsupported FOREVER )

Features- OS X even w/ Classic is missing something I need. (Can't use OS X w/out USB printer sharing)

Peripherals- OS X does not support a critical peripherals. (Still no Palm conduits. Canon Scanner works in Classic, but I want OS X support for it)

Usage- OS X even w/ Classic is my experimental Mas OS (running <50%) (See above)

I'm running a B&W G3 w/ Rage Pro VR and 448 megs of ram.

Well, let me just answer for both my Macs. One is a late 2001 iBook, 256MB RAM, 30GB HD. Not partitioned, never booted OS 9. The other is a G4 DP 500 with 256MB RAM, 40GB HD partitioned into an OS X part and an OS 9 part. The OS 9 part has largely become simple storage space.

Stability - OS X is rock solid. (Both)
Speed - OS X is fast and frisky. (G4)
Speed - OS X is sluggish (but it's OK). (iBook)
Features - OS X has everything I need now. (iBook)
Features - OS X and Classic has everything I need. (G4)
Peripherals - OS X supports my key peripherals. (All but my scanner)
Usage - OS X is my only Mac OS (running 100%). (Both)

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Mac OS X 10.1.2, iMac DV 400 (99), 512MB RAM

Stability - OS X is rock solid.

Speed - OS X is fast enough.
It's slower than Mac OS 9 but it's not slow or sluggish.

Features - OS X has everything I need now.

Peripherals - OS X does not support all my critical peripheral(s).
No Epson SC 600 driver, no web cam driver and no Palm Desktop.
My wacom tablet and my mouse are supported.

Usage - OS X is my only Mac OS (running 100%).
I use OS X and classic.

Stability - OS X has panicked once or twice w/ shutting off a firewire burner in 10.1... but not w/10.1.1 or 10.1.2... but otherwise absolutely rock solid
Speed - OS X is sluggish (but it's OK)
Features - OS X and Classic has everything I need.
Peripherals - OS X does not support my scanner... I'm not sure if that's too critical or not...
Usage - OS X w/Classic is my primary Mac OS (running 99% )

(500 MHz Cube, 1 GB RAM, 32 MB Radeon, 7200 RPM 30 GB HD, External QPS 12x/10x/32x FireWire CD-RW, OS X.1.2)

450DP/980MB running X.1.2 (with 9.2.1)

Stability - OS X is rock solid. - Since 10.1 (b4 as well bar USB Burners)
Speed - OS X is fast and frisky. - (Bar list view sort my kind etc)
Features - OS X (Very rarely Classic has everything I need.)
Peripherals - OS X supports my key peripherals. - but no m$ mouse drivers yet
Usage - OS X (running 99.99%) (w/ Classic (running 10%)) is my primary Mac OS . - I still have to boot OS 9.2.1 for DVD's as the region x program was broken by 10.1.2.

Stability - OS X has panicked (but it's OK). It has problems with soundsticks, but OS 9 has had problems too. Harman-kardon replaced the soundsticks and I still have the same problems, so it's Apple's fault.

Speed - OS X is fast at some things and sluggish at others(so in the end it's fast enough for me).

Features - OS X even w/ Classic is missing something I need, however OS X has features that OS 9 doesn't give me, that I need, so that also evens out.

Peripherals - OS X supports my key peripherals.

Usage - OS X is my only Mac OS (running 100%).

I see great promise. Things get better for OS X every week. I'm in FOR GOOD, I just need some more RAM for my iBook because IE scrolling is way too slow compared to my Pismo.

Stability--Rock solid. No complaints here.

Speed: Generally, good. There are some sluggish operations but nothing major.

Features: Good. No major complaints. I wish Netinfo would die! die! die! BTW, I do not use classic nor do I miss OS 9.

Peripherals-Everything works except my Umax scanner which I am selling. I already got a supported Agfa.

Usage-I use only Mac OS X and X Windows in full screen mode. Life is good.

Mac OS X isn't perfect but I love it. It will get only better!

there's one thing missing from the evaluation, and its apps, because no matter how well OSX turns out, we spend most of our time in apps. Perhaps we could add:
Apps - Apps are rock solid
Apps - Apps have crashed buts it OK cause OSX is rock solid
Apps - Apps crash regularly
Apps - Apps are speedy
Apps - Apps are sluggish
Apps - Apps are slow
yo frat boy. where's my tax cut.

iBook 600 640 RAM OS X.1.2 OS 9.2.2

Stability - OS X has panicked (but it's OK). Stability is otherwise very good.

Speed - OS X is very sluggish (but it's OK). Gaming is useless (but I don't care).

Features - OS X even w/ Classic is missing something I need.

Peripherals - OS X does not support a critical peripherals. My Samsung printer doesn't work, although a beta X driver is out. My Epson scanner works under Classic. My media readers do not work. My Handspring Visor Deluxe cannot sync (USB). My two still cameras work fine via USB though, as does my USB Zip drive.

Usage - OS X w/ Classic is my primary Mac OS (running >95%). However, I still spend a lot of time with my PCs to fill in the gaps.

Software - OS X has some of my key software, but not all.

I agree but I purposefully left OS X Apps out of the survey because there are so many categories/variables (e.g. Coaco, Carbon, Classic; "office", graphics, entertainment, utility; etc.). Perhaps you would like to sponsor a separate survey that delves into these issues and gets a "reality check" on OS X Apps here at the end of 2001.

Mac OS X 10.1.2, Ti Powerbook 550, 256MB RAM

Stability - OS X is rock solid.
Speed - OS X is fast enough.*
Features - OS X has everything I need now (except USB Overdrive
--OSX's fastest mouse setting is WAY too slow).
Peripherals - OS X does support all my critical peripherals.
Usage - OS X is my only Mac OS (running 100%).

* I'm also running OSX on my 7600/132 (with just the 132mhz 604 using Ryan Rempel's UUM). It is of course slow but I'm working on it. I'm still amazed that it works at all!!!!

Overall, I think OSX is outstanding.

We have two Macs:
- a rev. B iBook, 320 MB ram, 6 GB HD
- a 466 mHz "digital audio" Power Mac G4, 256 MB ram, 30 GB HD
Both have 10.1.x and 9.2.x installed.

Stability - OS X is rock solid. - iBook - no kernel panics ever.
Stability - OS X has panicked (but it's OK). - G4 - have had kernel panics while trying to use iMovie and a few other random times. However, much, much more stable than OS 9.

Speed - OS X is fast and frisky. - G4 - certainly this is subjective, but since 10.1 the speed has quite acceptable for me.
Speed - OS X is sluggish (but it's OK). - certainly usable, but some video acceleration wouldn't hurt - get the hint, Apple!! Maxing out the iBook to 320 MB made a big difference; I'd recommend it.

Features - OS X and Classic has everything I need. - iBook - all of my critical OS 9 apps run just fine under Classic, including my Microtek scanner software. A great piece of engineering!
Features - OS X even w/ Classic is missing something I need. - G4 - haven't upgraded to VPC 5 yet, so can't use it in OSX; this is probably the biggest single problem, because my wife relies on it heavily. Also would like to see native Palm Desktop, although her m100 does sync (experimentally) via Classic.

Peripherals - OS X supports my key peripherals. - both machines - both printers are supported natively; still waiting for support of my Newer Technology uDrive (wishful thinking, I know). Scanner and JamCam 3.0 digital camera work just fine under Classic. Firewire CD burning is flawless via the ADS Technologies PYRO enclosure in both OS 9 and OS X.

Usage - OS X w/ Classic is my primary Mac OS (running >50%). - iBook - this is my personal machine, and I love OS X.
Usage - OS X even w/ Classic is my experimental Mac OS (running <50%). - G4 - basically because of Virtual PC and my wife, who is less risk-tolerant than I am. Need more native support to switch completely.

Overall, very pleased and looking for better things in the future.

Since version 10.1 it is stable, far more than 9. Speed varies, most apps launch faster than in 9, deleting messages in Entourage or Mail can take a while, but never crashes the system as could happen in 9. Via Voice will not launch at all. All other operations in Word, Explorer, Entourage, Quicken, BBEdit are as fast or faster than 9.
All peripherals except for anything SCSI are well supported.
Because of it's stability I only use X, refuse to even launch Classic!
Really miss availability of themes (totally hate grey) and most imortantly I wish for the ability to simply copy my X partition to my other HD and have a bootable partition. In these two areas 9 is superior.

Powerbook G4 400mhz, 384MB RAM

Stability - OS X is rock solid.
Speed - OS X is fast and frisky (except browser window resize)
Features - OS X and Classic has everything I need (w/ benefit of FCP and VPC announced but I still have to get them)
Peripherals - OS X supports all my peripherals.
Usage - OS X w/ Classic is my primary Mac OS (running >70%, Classic use <10%) note: this will change dramatically once I get FCP and VPC.

Waiting for Photoshop and Diablo II to be OS X native. After that as long as future software is OS X native, I'll have very little need to be in Classic and OS 9.

Speed - OS X is sluggish (but it's OK).

1. Power MacG4 800/DP, 1500MB, GeForce2 Mx/Twin View, Apple 22" Studio Display
2. PowerBook "Wallstreet" 320MB

Using both systems simultaneously I get a pretty good idea of what's top & bottom of performance. I'm also still running OS 9 a lot, so good regular feedback there. (I don't mean Classic which I have given up on in it's present incarnation - what a botch !!)

Stability- OS X is rock solid. (with the exception of Classic)

Speed- OS X is slow. (does seem to be an improvement in window resizing in 10.1.2)

Features- OS X even w/ Classic is missing something I need. (USB printer sharing)

Peripherals- OS X does not support a critical peripherals. (HP has just released G85 driver)

Usage- OS X even w/ Classic is my experimental Mas OS (running <50%) (Except for iTunes !!)

Hardware: Titanium G4 Powerbook | 500 Mhz | 512 MB RAM | 20 GB HD
System: OS X 10.1.2 | Classic [running 9.2.2]

Stability - OS X has panicked (but it's OK). -- I had one kernel panic since March when I began using OS X.
Speed - OS X is sluggish (but it's OK). -- I find the interface a bit sluggish, but the multitasking more than makes up for it.
Features - OS X and Classic has everything I need.
Peripherals - OS X supports all my peripherals.
Usage - OS X is my only Mac OS (running 100%).

Overall I have found OS X a great pleasure to use on a daily basis, even more so than I did with OS 9 before X arrived. Stability, protected memory and preemptive multitasking may be buzzwords, but they pack a lot of weight in terms of importance, and OS X has them.

It doesn't support my Epson Photo 750 (though Classic does). But the blame for this is on Epson, not Apple.

Usage - OS X is my only Mac OS (running 100%).
The only exceptions are playing VGS or burning on my SCSI CD-R. But both of these are rare enough that I consider them negligible.

Stability - Rock solid (2 kernel panics back in the 10.0 days).
Speed - Sluggish (but OK). There are still delays in rendering very long menu lists (100's of fonts, for instance) and copying/moving/deleting large numbers of files.
Features - OS X and Classic have everything I need.
Peripherals - All my peripherals are supported.
Usage - OS X and Classic are my main OS. I boot up in OS 9 once every month or two, strictly to do maintenance.

Running 10.1.2 and 9.2.2 as Classic on a 350 MHz slot-loading iMac with 768 MB of RAM and a 40 GB Maxtor hard drive.

G4/400AGP, 1GB RAM

Stability - No version of X that I've run has ever crashed - bulletproof.
Speed - Fast enough for me
Features - Has everything I need for now
Peripherals - No drivers yet for my Epson 1640SU Photo scanner, and my Epson 870 photo printer requires three steps to print, giving me error messages, but still printing in the end.
Usage - X is my primary, except when I'm scanning, which is about 5% of the time.

Stability - OS X has panicked (but it's OK). But application stability is the bigger problem...

Speed - OS X is slow. 10.1 is much better, but still too slow compared to Windows/PC boxes...

Features - OS X even w/ Classic is missing something I need. I like Mac OS X, but it still prevents me from being productive... For that I need to use Windows 2000 or Mac OS 9....

Peripherals - OS X supports my key peripherals. All except my scanner...

Usage - OS X is my only Mac OS (running 100%). Except for running Windows 2000 inside VPC -- there are still some things you just can't do on a Mac...

I have a TiBook 500MHz with 20GB hard drive and 512MB of RAM....

Stability - OS X is rock solid.
Speed - OS X is fast and frisky (95% of the time)
Features - OS X and Classic has everything I need.
Peripherals - OS X supports all my peripherals.
Usage - OS X w/ Classic is my primary Mac OS (running >98%).

I bought the TiBook, my first Mac, in April 2001 specifically because of OS X. I have very few complaints with OS X at this point (10.1.2), and I'm hoping to switch my PC-using mom over to the Mac soon!

Apple get your backside into gear. Give us a responsive GUI!!!I'm typing this on my PC because I'm sick and tired of shitty performance when I'm using my computer. And no, I will not buy more RAM. I will wait till summer and then either buy a PC and drop the Mac forever or buy a new Mac if there's an improvement.

I have posted the results of the April 2001 OS X Month One Reality Check for your reading enjoyment and comparison with the current results.

The April results are available at http://homepage.mac.com/reality_x

The zip archive contains the Internet Explorer web archives from the OS X Month One Reality Check run on April 24-25th of 2001.

That survey was posted on the same three online forum sites: Apple, MacNN and MacFixIt on April 24th soliciting feedback in the Apple forum. The original plan was to use the outlining feature in the Apple forum to allow easy viewing of the results by topic. While this was handy for tabulation, it was difficult for survey participants and didn't allow easy 'snap shots' of a particular user's results. Luckily, the survey participants switched to posting their own OS X snap shots. The MacNN visitors quickly began answering the survey directly in the MacNN forum. The web archives only capture the results from the Apple and MacNN fora because the MacFixIt visitors did not post in that site.

This survey does NOT purport to be a representative sampling of OS X users/usage in April 2001. It simply captures feedback on OS X Stability, Speed, Features and Peripheral support from some of the visitors to three Online Fora over a two day period. Hence the results almost certainly over represent both ends of the spectrum of OS X users in April 2001: the ones who were very happy with OS X (e.g. those who were visiting these fora to help others and/or act as a 'vocal' OS X protagonist) and those who were very unhappy with OS X (e.g. those who were visiting these fora to get help and/or act as a 'vocal' OS X antagonist).

What the April survey does do, is serve as a baseline for subsequent surveys like the one now in December which use the same wording in the same fora to gauge the progress of OS X in these areas over time.

FWIW I will run another survey on the one year anniversary of the commercial release of OS X (March 2002). Hopefully Apple will have released 10.2 and we will all have had plenty of time to evaluate it by that time

Stability - OS X is rock solid. Uptimes of a month easily achieved.
Speed - OS X is fast and frisky....on the g4/867. Speed is "okay" on the Tibook/400.
Features - OS X and Classic has everything I need. Still need classic for a few apps, Dreamweaver,
a few others.
Peripherals - OS X does not support critical peripherals. PRINTER SUPPORT. Especially
USB PRINTER SHARING. Hello, Apple, are you listening!!! The other annoying lack is direct
cd>cd copying in Toast.
Usage - OS X w/ Classic is my primary Mac OS. I'm 10-15% of the time
in classic, the rest is pure OSX. Almost never boot into OS 9.
