Digital surfaces are literally perfect. Any texture/shader you want, instantly.
Mass production = compromises and tolerance stackups, some suppliers only do certain textures, certain finishes aren't UV stable so you need to fall back on osmething else, etc.
If you're reviewing something for the design intent, to gain approval from the board, the goal is to make it look as perfect/good as possible, and then see how close you can get to that in production.

That’s a good point. Quite often, viewing full-scale clays will communicate a good sense of the real-world presence, volume, mass, heft, etc. that the vehicle will inhabit, that isn’t going to be easily experienced in VR.

Yes it is.
Also, this isn't just about vehicles.

But if you then build real ones having re-tooled a production line and they look shit in the real world then thats an expensive issue. I'm sure they'd have thought of using VR and would be if it were good enough for what they want to achieve.

... places are using VR. The big 3 are using VR. My company isn't yet.
You cannot simulate production defects in software..... we basically just use design intent models to compare first shots and see what we can do to get closer. That could all be digital.

Yes. Why. Boomers.
"We've done this same thing for 50 years why would we do it different?"
Today the whole clay process is pretty fake and artificial; the model is done in CAD first, then the clay is cut/shaped on the buck with with a 3axis, then hand finished.

So I'm getting that there is a market for VR in extremely specialised niches like product design and surgeons' training.
The mass market appeal, however, is gaming and the occasional gimmick.
Huh.

I would imagine it could also be useful for real estate, vacation planning?

Real estate - very much yes. I’ve seen 3D-ish presentations of a property (particularly the house) that were SO MUCH BETTER than even really great still photos. It also helps “fix” the whole thing with cheating the camera position to make a room look bigger. When you can move the POV around, that cheat goes out the window.
Vacation planning - I think so, but it depends on the locale and what you’re going to do there. Hiking, museums, sailing…heck yeah! Hotel room in some city (no matter what the hotel or city)…not so much.

Huh.
I mean.... editing 4k video is pretty niche too. But apple goes after that...

Yes. It’s not like iPhones have been shooting 4K video since the 6s. Why would anyone need this niche feature?

Video editing, esp at high res, is niche as fuck. Most content viewed on youtube is viewed on a phone screen, something like 70-80% last time I checked.

No it isn’t. 8K, yeah. Most TV/film is at 4K now. A lot of YT too.

4K Represents a Tiny Slice of the Market
Finding concrete statistics on 4K as it pertains to YouTube is not easy. What we can safely say is that only a tiny share of computer users online have their resolutions set to 4K. As shown by screenresolutions.org (at the time of writing), only 0.12% of users online are using 4K resolution, with 2K just creeping inside the top ten, and regular 1080p (1K, if you like) topping the list by a wide margin.
“But what about TVs?” I hear you yell. Well, more and more people are indeed watching YouTube through their TV, thanks to the prevalence of things like Amazon’s Fire Stick, Smart TVs and gaming consoles with an app ecosystem. However, 4K TVs are still vastly outnumbered by 1080p, so even if every TV owner on the planet was watching YouTube on their television rather than their computer, 4K would still be in the minority.
To briefly touch on phones since, of course, mobile devices are the most popular kind of device for watching YouTube on. While it is true that many—probably most—modern phones can display 4K videos, it’s something of a moot point since our feeble human eyes can’t tell the difference on screens that small. It is estimated that a healthy human eye can discern detail up to 326ppi (pixels per inch). 1080p on an average mobile phone screen is already higher than that, so increasing the pixel density further won’t make a noticeable difference.
sauce: https://alanspicer.com/should-i-upload-4k-to-youtube/
Given the VASTLY higher storage requirements and longer/laggier/more annoying editing, I don't think it's worth it for what I do.

Given that most iPhones don't have physical zoom, 4K resolution translates to a little more than 1080p when edited in many cases.
Also, per anecdotal evidence:
Literally *everyone* I know shoots video with their smartphone at least once in a while.
Literally *noone* I know uses VR features on their smartphone. Ever.

Look HERE.
It’s a cradle/stereo viewer that holds your phone while you run a VR app. Like (it’s really old!) Google Cardboard…

Durr. I was thinking of AR.
Still, point being: there’s billions of people who regularly use video features.
Comparing VR to 4K video really isn’t a good argument, in my view.
The use cases for VR are extremely niche, and I don’t see that changing.

iOS 15.4 had enabled adding drivers licenses, at least for Arizona.

At this point in time, the digital driver’s license is only used at Sky Harbor airport at the TSA checkpoints. You use it like Apple Pay.

If you are in any danger of having your phone taken by the police (or other unsavory characters), activate SOS mode immediately. This disables face/touch ID. It also might dial 911 and send a message to your emergency contacts with your location, so check your settings first.

For the uninitiated, that’s pressing both lock and volume down together for a few seconds.

I was once trying to get Siri to listen to me in the car, which is initiated by holding the lock button, which I'm able to do through my pants with the phone still in my pocket. But something went wrong between Siri and the car and I assume one of the two was yelling at me so in my attempt to shut that down, I started stabbing furiously at the lock button. The "whoop whoop" and being connected to my local emergency dispatch was a bit of a surprise, but I hung on the line and let them know that I had pressed the wrong button and didn't actually need emergency help.

I had to call 911 recently. They hung up, I hung up.
They hung up first. My hang up hit the dial button. I hang up again as quickly as possible.
Ring! Ring! “Why did you call and hang up?”
(My initial call wasn’t an emergency. The system to summon a cop here is 911, even if it’s not an emergency)

Here’s another good one. Was talking to Siri with the window open while I was driving at 2AM and amusing myself with what she thought I was saying.
Imagine my surprise when she thinks I say “call my landlord”.

And now the iOS OneDrive app removed the feature where they upload jpgs, and instead will only upload the HEIC file, which Windows chokes on. In theory, one could install HEIC support into Windows, except IT policy has that disallowed. So...cool.

Somewhere in there my phone turned on iCloud Photos without telling me, and now almost all of my free iCloud storage is crammed with photos.
I’ve backed up the pics on the phone, and I’m about to log into iCloud to purge all of that stuff. Since I’m using Time Machine for my MBP, and I back up my photos ON the MBP, I think I’m safe to dump what’s in iCloud. But I’m ready for the “OMG, do you know what you’re doing?!?!?!” dialogs from iCloud…

I logged in from my MBP and took the content of my Photos in iCloud from over 1500 to around 400 (which I will pare down when I have more time/attention). And the interesting thing is that iCloud initially had this yellow banner that said I was nearly out of space, but once I got below a certain number of pictures, the banner went away.
I’ve resolved to check the iCloud Photos settings whenever my phone or iPad update their OSs.
On that note, after the last update (to iOS 15.4.1) the phone offered a tutorial on how to use the SOS function. Honestly, to me it was a stealth function until recently…but now it’s pretty well “out there for everybody to see” so I hope it helps the folks who now know what it is and how to use it.
