I'm mainly interested to see what difference the absence of the chrome makes. In the pic above you can already see they removed the chrome ring around the camera. But I'd like to see what it looks like from the front without the chrome lining along the side.

Also, I wonder where Apple has added the extra antennas. I remember reading that these chrome parts were actually used as antennas. IIRC the one around the camera was the antenna for BT. With those parts now plastic, where did they put the antennas?

Oooo, black-painted metal.

I just hope we're not in for the next round of flaking paint rants.

I hope not.

But then, they've done it for years with the black-backed U2 iPods, and I've never seen a complaint about those...

So is a new iPhone at WWDC a given??? (To enthusiasts at least?)

And how quickly did the iPhone 3G come into stores after WWDC last year?

I'm in the market for an iPhone, I've been waiting a few months for the new one to arrive though.

Getting sick of my Sony Ericsson that shuts itself down everyday.

The site appears to be hammered, or I'd post a direct link to the pictures, but:

macrumors.com/2009/05/30/photos-of-next-gen-iphone-in-action-auto-focus-and-compass/

A new compass app and video recording, among other things, are shown off in what looks like an engineering sample of the new iPhone (supposedly in the old iPhone's casing, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is the new iPhone's casing, and it just isn't that different).

Looks like we'll get a demo of OS 3.0 at WWDC. I'd expect the iPhone 2009 to then go on sale in late June or July.

That's funny - mine does that too.

I figure I'll sign up for the T-Mobile two-year contract for August or September; that way I can be reasonably sure to get a current update at contract renewal in two years' time, as well.

A lot of carriers will let you upgrade before the end of your contract if you stick with them. I for example signed up for an 18 month contract with Telia. They will however let me get a new iPhone and a new contract up to three months before the old contract runs out. Depending on how cool it is, I'll be getting the iPhone 2009 in October.

O2 (my previous carrier) would let me renew *six months* in advance to get a new phone early.

In this case, however, I anticipate the phone being *late* (as in, the usual delay in availability), and it's probably not the worst idea to wait six weeks or so after release before replacing a mission critical device.

I'm sure T-Mobile wouldn't mind me signing up early and giving me the phone later. But the longer I wait, the bigger the chance of revised contracts terms, as well.

Yeah, in the case of T-Mobile revised contract terms are almost a necessity!

From what I hear, the w910i as it is labelled in the UK has been a faulty phone throughout it's existence. I blamed Orange for the phone as it was contracted to them, but they state that it is a fault with the model of the phone and that it is Sony's fault.

They then stated that the 2nd time it does the same fault (upon breaking) that I could get a different model. That happened and they stated that after going through their questionnaire the fault is indeed different to the last time (err...no it's the exact same fault!)

I'm on my 4th Sony Ericsson w910i. It is the worst phone in existence. I'd find it funny if Sony hadn't also delivered a widescreen t.v back in the days which lasted 2 week's before having a replacement model that did the same (they eventually replaced it with a different model for the tele). Then I bought a PS2 on release day which worked, I put it away for Christmas only to find on christmas morning that it had blown, called Sony only to find that I was among many other customers and children having the same fault on christmas day. I also had a Sony mini disk player that was d.o.a.

Bottom line: Never, EVER, buying Sony again.

Can't wait to get my Apple iPhone.

So that means that they won't show the model until later in the month and model OS 3.0 on the iPhone 3G at WWDC? (in you're eyes, ofcourse).

They could demo OS 3.0 on the new iPhone hardware. They probably will too if they want to show stuff like the compass. But the device still won't go on sale till later.

Ah, well I have a k800i and to its credit, it worked just fine for over two years.

It's started doing the random shutdown thing fairly recently as I wait for the next iPhone release.

I hope so, with a date for it's release.

Ah that is good.

Mine was like this after 2 months of owning it.

I guess I've just had a bad time with Sony.

New 4GB iPhone?

Meh. I'll gladly take 32GB. I had been hoping for a 32GB version already for the 3G. My 16GB are used up now and I definitely want more.

Judging by the chrome rim this would be a 3G model though. Maybe Apple will keep a 4GB 3G version around to cater to the budget segment?

It has been speculated this could be one of the new features on the iPhone 2009. Remember all these rumors about the second, front-mounted camera.

New iPhone to be dubbed "iPhone Video"

I'm a bit surprised about the capitalization though. It is iPhone nano, iPod touch, and Mac mini. OTOH it was indeed iPod Photo*. Maybe it's not BS.

[* Edit: But apparently it was later remamed "iPod photo". linky]

More 'leaked' images of the new iPhone

There's a new button on the bottom right side. The headphone jack is now at the bottom right next to the dock connector. Black matte plastic? Check. Black buttons? Check. Black rim? Check. But the camera lens still has the chrome lining.

There also appears to be some kind of groove at the top. Any ideas what that might be? Doesn't exactly look like a front-mounted camera to me.

Pretty, but idiotic.

Nothing better than to stick the home button right on the edge, where it's absolutely guaranteed to be constantly pressed when in any pocket or bag, continually switching on the screen and eating battery.

Wishful Thinking Fail.

A 100 dollar iPhone would be pretty dang sweet, we'd sell a boat load of those! Actually I think at that price it'd basically destroy the feature phone market. I wonder if they're gonna differentiate the iPhone models by giving one 3.2mbps 3G and one 7.1mbps 3G. It'd be easier to push customers to the higher end models then.

I can see how the idea might appeal to the feature phone market. But personally, I'd never give up 4 GB of memory to save $100. What is a $100 with the iPhone? Over the course of the 24 month contract that's one burger each month. IMHO those savings just aren't worth reducing your memory by half. OTOH maybe many people out there do indeed only have 200 songs and no video content. But are those the same people that want to spend $30/month on unlimited 3G data?

Well, the pics with the jack on the bottom (see Simon, a few posts back) did seem kinda fake. Not because of anything about the images per se; I didn't look at them that closely. But the site they came from also claimed to have a photograph of Apple's website for when it comes out, and the copy read "Ebony, curious, advanced." Nobody writing website text for Apple is going to come up with that.

Actually, this is the case of which images were leaked back in February or so.

The other one (with the home button directly at the bottom edge) is - to my impression of what Apple would release - poorly thought-through but nicely rendered fan fiction.

/Waits for Monday.

I hope that they release a new iPhone and not some 4GB waste of space. Like someone else said, we're looking for apps, iPod and video with 4GB??? Doesn't sound worthwhile.

/hopes for a 32GB iPhone redesign.

I don't see that happening, ctt1wbw. So far AT&T hasn't disabled anything in any of the phones I've had with them, and it looks like this would be a really good "buy it now!" feature.

But I'm just waiting to see what really happens tomorrow. I may be looking at getting an iPhone in the near term, and that would be a really sweet package.

According to MacRumors/Daring Fireball, it'll be called the iPhone 3GS, and sport 3.0, video capture, and better hardware. Pretty much what we've all been hearing.

Honestly, you should bite anyway. Just like most things Apple, the sum of the iPhone is greater than it's parts or Its "on paper" specs. I'm still using a first gen iPhone and it's still, overall, the slickest package in it's category. I don't have any experience with the new Palm Pre but I have used just about every thing else since the iPhone's introduction (courtesy of the plethora of teens in this neighborhood and all their various phones from blackberrys to other touchscreen smart phones. There really isn't anything that's quite got the total package that the iPhone has. In the past 2 years, this thing has become as essential to the way I operate as a set of car keys and everything else still feels clunky by cmparison. If you don't yet have an iPhone, the next version, whatever it's specs, will most likely be a quantum leap over what you are using right now.

I agree - every time I load "USA Manual" it gives me a low memory usage and will usually crash. If I restart the phone and it starts from fresh, it works fine.
