Sorry if this is previously answer question.
I'm a new OS X owner that come with a new i Book.
i notice that after I do the Tiger upgrade I seem to only have half of the 30gb drive for myself.
Is this normal? Why are they running out so fast?s

a 30GB drive has about 27GB of usable space on it. then subtract size of the factory install and you could have only half of the original 30GB available to you.

On a similar note, when getting a new iBook, do you recommend doing a fresh install of Tiger over the factory install? Back in my PC days, you had to do a clean install of Windows when you got a new computer if you didn't want all the pre-installed junk on there. Is it the same case here?

Yes, doing a fresh install for Mac OS X will reduce the amount of space it takes up. I did a custom install on my iBook, and I had A LOT more space for use on the iBook HD.

Same thing here, irockdabari. I only had about 27gb on my new 40gb iBook drive, and I did a fresh install with all of the apps I want and ended up having 35gb left!

I left out all of the localization and font stuff, as well as a lot of the extra printer drivers that I'd never need.
