When making a standard landscape video with an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 5 (my wife and I), will the phone know it's sideways, or will I end up with a sideways portrait video? Also, which way is up and which way is down?

The video will have the same orientation that the camera had when you shot it.

Yep, whichever way you hold it.

Note that it won't switch rotation mid-video if you rotate the phone while shooting.

Also, if you shoot a video in the portrait orientation, you better have a really good reason for doing so.

Absolutely. Please watch this PSA to make sure this never happens:

Anybody who's ever worked with a portrait monitor can tell you that that gizmodo article is complete bullshit (surprise, surprise).

I mean, seriously: Landscape is the preferred option because our eyes are side-by-side? Really? **** you.

The only valid point he makes at all applies to playback on regular TVs or monitors. Kind of. Actually only to editors and hosting platforms who impose a landscape format.
