G'Day All

I have just purchased a 12" Powerbook (the machine I have been wanting or a while) - however I think I have a problem.

I had planned to get a new Apple Display (like the 20" Cinema) and use the Powerbook with the display closed - only problem is I want to use the Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse.

Anyone know if this can be done?

Thanks in advance

Robert

i don't know what you are asking.

Of course you can use your powerbook with lid close operation, all you need to do is using your mouse or keyboard to wake up your powerbook. But before you do that, you have to set up your bluetooth keyboard and mouse first.

I assume you are getting a apple's wireless keyboard, right? you can even wake up your powerbook using the bluetooth wireless keyboard too.

did you install the original software from the wireless keyboard/mouse cd rom? After you installed it, there's an option in the keyboard/mouse preferences where you can click to allow wireless device to wake up your computer.

After you enable it, all you have to do is turn on the mouse or keyboard and press to wake up your computer.

Go to System Preferences -> Bluetooth -> Settings Tab and check the box "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer"

OK, then let me be more precise:
12'' 867
10.3.1 (does the recent update change things?)
tried to tinkle with all bt Settings.

Question is this hard or Softwaredependend?

Oh and I had my BT-Module repaired recently. Manufacturer ID: 1452 (via system profiler).

I hope we can figure it out.

Greetings

Yes!

Bluetooth update that came with the mouse is important. As it says for 10.2.6 or later on the disk I thought it would come with Panther but that seems not to be the case.

Once updated the checkbox is no mor greyed out.

I have a powerbook 17 inch and a wireless mouse and keyboard. I have a flat screen samsung 19" moniter.

I want to know is why in the heck if you want to use wireless,
do you have to plug in a mouse and keyboard into it to use
it closed. Isn't the idea of a wireless mouse and keyboard
to get rid of all the wires. Why go wireless if I have to
have a wired keyboard hooked up anyway? I f I knew this
was the case I wouldn't of wasted the money on going wireless.

Any suggestion will be very appreciated.

WHY APPLE DID YOU DO THIS???????

You don't need to plug in a keyboard or a mouse. You can use the machine wirelessly (apart from power) with the Bluetooth peripherals.

From the posts above it sounds as if there might be an issue with updates not being recognised as necessary by the OS, but once those problems are fixed it'll all work fine (I'm using a 12" with a Cinema display at home an it's great).

The only thing I wish was different was that you could power the machine on from the keyboard. As it is (and I don't think I've missed anything) I have to boot the machine, put it to sleep and then plug it in. Not a huge problem as I so seldom have the machine off anyway!

I just talked to my apple-dealer about this problem. Quote:

"The Powerbook is not designed to run in Closed mode because it might get to hot and this could affect the Display (by e.g. melting parts of it)."

I find this very disappointing because I used to think that whatever is possible with macs without a warning cannot affect or damage the device, that would mean if it is dangerous to use clamshellmode it should not be possible to run it.

Sad

Update: The Apple KB on the otherhand tells me that it is possible:

Obviously the guy didn't know what he was talking about. If you still uncertain, just wait until you get your powerbook wake up to the attached display, then open the lid just a little bit, about 1/4 inch, and let the airflow better.

Hi, there I finally solved the problem on my machine.

Quickinfo:
I had upgrade the firmware of my internal BT-Module (I dont think those come with SW-Update)

Longstory:
Problem was that I ordered the Mouse & KB very early thus not having the correct SW & FW Versions on my CD. Several Documents helped me to find a solution:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86524 describing the problem

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120276 SW update (although I think this came with SW Update

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120253 Firmewareupdate

So I hope that I can now use my Mac the way I thought it should be possible. My faith in Apple is again reinstalled (didt really think that beeing the first to have bt mouse & KB will be totally seamless...). My faith in my local dealer however is heavily damaged. It just seams that I am not the kind of customer he focuses on.

So, I hope this helps someon else out there
