Updated setup

Went from this dual screen setup w/ my old 17" Sony HMD-a200 CRT monitor:

To this new dual screen setup w/ my new Dell 2405FPW:

*Wires have since been cleaned up. I just took a quick pic once I had everything hooked up.*

Don't mind Abu perched up on top of my monitor. I just put him there for fun when I snapped this pic. I still have my Jessica Alba wallpaper, she's just hidden behind iTunes. Anyway, hope you like. The 24" Widescreen Dell LCD monitor at a 1/3 the cost of a 30" ACD, and 1/2 the cost of a 23" ACD, is the best bang for the buck in my opinion. This thing dwarfs my 12" Pb. Haha!

Nice. How well does the 12" PB graphics stand up to the 24" video requirements of the 24" Dell monitor. I would love to buy a powerbook, but with even used 2 year old macs going on ebay for 15-$1600, the 15" and 17" are out. I would like to know if you can still have many applications open, expose, DVD playback, etc....

I have a 12" PowerBook and a 2005FPW. A lot of the performance is fine, but Exposé bogs down fairly quickly and Dashboard graphics aren't as quick. You get the sense that you're pushing the frame buffer too hard.

If you're going to get a 2405FPW, I'd suggest a 15" PowerBook (preferably one with the 128 MB VRAM option) if you want to drive it smoothly. The double-whammy of 64 MB of VRAM and an old mobile video chipset makes it a bit much for the 12" to handle in Tiger.

Well, to me it seems to handle the 24" Dell monitor just fine. Currently I am running a 12" Pb/1.5ghz/1.25gb RAM. Given that the Nvidia card supports resolutions up to 2048 x 1536 on an external display, I figured it could handle the 1920 x 1200 resolution on this monitor. The only problem, if you really want to call it that, is that the laptop fan will kick in once you start multi-tasking a lot. But from what I've read here on the forums, the system fan on the 12" Pb is prone to kick in sooner compared to if you were using a 15"/17" Pb. I'm not as picky as a lot of people are about the noise the fan makes, so when it comes on it doesn't really bother me. I actually expect it to come on given that the video card that drives the 12" Pb isn't as powerful as the 15"/17" Pb. I've had a web browser open, with itunes playing, with Photoshop CS open (and editing), and expose & dashboard seem to be working just fine w/o any bogging down.

I already had my 12" Pb (I bought it mainly for it's portability), so I went with this monitor b/c I wanted something big and affordable. From what you wrote, if you haven't picked up a Pb yet, I'd recommend what the other guy said, and get a 15" Pb. Anyway, that's just my .02.

The monitor pictured here (17", 1280*768)was actually my first HDTV display. I purchased it over a year ago for about $800. Recently replaced it with a much larger LCD, so this got moved into service as a second display. I don't know how I ever lived without dual monitors!

Yeah, so that gnome was the property of my otherwise reasonable roommate at the time. I sort of always hoped that a freak wind would knock it off the porch. That'd show it not to steal my underwear.

Hello, everyone.

New to the group, thought this would be a good place to introduce myself So here's my little powerbook family:

On the left is my 15" 1.5ghz/2gig/super, and on the right is my wife's 12" 1.3ghz/768/combo.

And of course, within 2 weeks of having my 15", I just had to do something on it to make it different. Some mac heads think this is sacreligious, but I kinda dig it:

voided the warranty right off and inserted an antistatic scrap in the apple window.

Don't really have an official setup for mine--it kinda just hangs out wherever I am. The beauty of the portability.

Could that be an illusion - maybe the screens are tilted at different angles? Or they are set at different brightness levels?

There is definitely a difference in that picture though!

Thanks,

I don't know if they were at the same brightness levels or not. I haven't maxed them out side by side to compare... I suspect the difference isn't as big as it looks in the photo.

unfortunately...there is a big difference.
i've compared the screens at the apple store (to make sure mine wasn't defective or something).

the 12" rocks, but the 15" screen kills it.
