It came out in Sweden last Friday. I've noticed that US release has been a week or more late for several movies so far this season. That has never been the case before, I wonder why they're doing it that way now.

I've noticed this too. Maybe to curb piracy?

It builds suspense through word of mouth on the `net.

Really want to see this, I'm hoping it isn't just gobs of eye candy.

Yeah, I think this is why American advanced release is probably at an end.

Me too, but it does have Theron in a skin-tight suit, so let's hope it isn't just that.

This is the first movie in ages that stands a fair chance of getting me back into a theater.
I'll still probably wait for the DVD, though. I hate theaters these days.

I used to feel the same way for the last few years, and then I went to Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy because my sister invited me, and I had a great time. That's what got me back to see The Avengers this week. 3D is great, because all the annoying people go to the 3D shows, so the 2D showings are full of people who just want to appreciate the movie.

Exactly.

But I am planning to see it again, perhaps in 3D for the heck of it.

And it should. I've been checking the reviews, and apparently the story is just stupid. The consensus seems to be that it's visually a very good movie and Scott did a great job directing it, but he couldn't save the plot.

I'm still going to go see it, reviews be damned. Alien was billed as a horror movie over being science fiction, and the reviewers were wrong there, so even if it isn't a story I'll think is what I want to be an Alien prequel, I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Just finished watching Prometheus. Definitely a must-see.

The film is breathtakingly beautiful, and the horror parts are really horrifying, though maybe not scary. I wasn't scared but I was grinding my teeth a few times. But I did see other people jump.

Sadly, it suffers from a typical horror-film problem: everyone behaves like an idiot. These are the stupidest scientists on (well, from) Earth. When they all decided to remove their helmets on an alien world, I flashed-back to Amazon Women on the Moon. And that's not even the stupidest mistake made by these ostensibly smart people.

EDIT: But, they are incredibly well-acted stupid people. All the praise about the performances is deserved.

Fortunately, the film doesn't make the one mistake everyone thought it would: making the female lead into another Ripley. Both Shaw and Vickers are tough, but they aren't Ripley clones, they are tough in their own ways.

EDIT: oh yeah, I was worried about the "Chariot of the Gods" plot line, but they didn't do what I worried they'd do, so I'm satisfied.

The original Alien is one of my favorite movies of all time and I thought Prometheus was poorly written mediocre crud.

It's hard to get into specifics without massive spoilers.

Somewhere in that mess of a movie there was a cool movie trying to get out... but it did not.

I just don't get why 35 years later, Ridley Scott felt the need to return to the universe and give us something so unnecessary?

Oh boy.
The visuals, the atmosphere, the editing? All top notch.
The characters, the plot cohesion, the realistic motivators? C grade afterthoughts.

They reuse pretty much every element from the existing Alien movies. I'm not just talking about the look, the feel, the corporations, etc. I'm talking about character types, plot points, twists, etc. So much so that it's blatantly obvious what is going to happen next.
Basically, the more you think about the film, the more gaping holes you'll find. It's not a "hard sci-fi action/horror movie that makes you jump AND makes you think" that the trailer promised. It's more of a "soft sci-fi horror with characters too stupid to tie their own shoes and too mute to tell each other (or the audience) anything that is going" movie. But it is probably still worth seeing. Matinee.

I'm in the theatre right now and it's starting in 10 minutes. Went to the avx 3D. As much as I hate 3D I prefer the avx (larger digital screen better sound better seats) so I'll give a review on what I think of its use of 3D later tonight.

Saw it. Really liked it.

Saw it in 3D ... the extra 'D' added nothing to the movie for me except an extra hit to my wallet.

I was going to say, the 3D is NOT worth it at all.

I liked the movie but was a little disappointed. I think it could have been so much more. I was reading up on the movie in Wikipedia and what got filmed was not the original concept created in 2000. Fox as always interfered a lot in the making of the movie and made a lot of changes to be able to cut costs and to market to a wider audience. The original concept would have been a restricted movie.

Unfortunately, it was everything I expected. Nice visuals and direction, but giant pile of HORESH*T for a plot. I don't think my eyes stopped rolling after the ID/evolution argument.

All I could think of during the movie was that for $3 trillion, you'd think they could afford to hire people who weren't all complete retards.

QFMFT. Especially the underlined portion. Definitely worth seeing and I really enjoyed myself in the theatre despite realizing that some things didn't make sense...but then once we started to digest what had actually happened the nonsensical problems started to loom larger and larger.

Also: I thought the Imax 3D was awesome. Simply gorgeous, and incredibly well-done compared to, say, Avengers or Tintin. Very little of this "3 characters popping out at me and the midground a bit of a muddled mess" effect. I think it may be mostly attributed to the sparse landscape in general, but it was still the type of subtle 3D that I think hands-down works best. I have no idea what you guys are talking about on that front.

Just remember the story that we got to see now is not the original what was developed in 2000 before Alien vs Predator. That's how long this movie has been sitting. Fox interfered greatly with it. Originally Ridley Scott and James Cameron wrote it but James Cameron couldn't work with fox. Fox cut corners to save money (250 Million to 150 Million) and im sure that affected the story and they also wanted it to reach a broader audience so the script was changed to make it less violent.

I think most of the blame for the little issues with the movie can be squarely placed on Fox executives.

I really don't care if the story is different and/or less violent. That doesn't make it worse in and of itself. In fact, if James Cameron was originally involved but then was taken off, I'd automatically assume that would make the movie better, since he is a master of mediocre drivel when it comes to movies.

Either way, almost everyone seems to agree that there's a really good movie in there somewhere. Good actors, good premise, yadda yadda. It's somewhere in the writing and/or editing process that the ball seems to have been dropped - and that, in theory, should not have a huge lot to do with executives, should it?

What's weird about Prometheus is that if you take any 5 minute chunk of it, and it's probably pretty good.... but when you take all those pieces and put them together, it makes for a really sloppy and bad movie.

The first half made it seem like it was going somewhere interesting, and I kept waiting for that "ah-ha!" moment when everything would come together and all the dumb shit would make sense, but it never came. They just kept going deeper and deeper down the dumb hole.

Beautiful visuals. Thought Charlize Theron would have done far better with the role that Noomi Rapace had. Am not saying Theron wasn't perfect, but she didn't have a lot to work with.

The final chest-burster scene was unnecessary and made the production look campy.

The real problem is that Noomi's religious character couldn't figure out the "why these creators want to kills us problem" As humans, I guess we take too much for granted that we believe that all life and/or intelligence is precious. Guess those creator types think differently. In their eyes, as a species, we're an infestation that needs to be eradicated.

She's attractive, no question about that. But she doesn't carry the movie, that's all.

I've mellowed a bit on my overall disappointment since I saw it. Originally I felt cheated, even with all of the Alien (and Aliens) references in it. It just didn't flow well, and the plot was forced I think. But I'll buy it on Blu Ray and watch it a few more times to be sure.

I'm amazed that the Red Letter media guy is so normal looking. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but when he didn't look like Walter Joseph Kovacs with a lazy eye and a severe acne, I was somewhat disappointed.

Yeah, there are a lot of questions raised about how they could find so many stupid scientists to participate in a single expedition.

However, many other questions are beside the point. A lot of people ask: why did the Space Jockey at the beginning of the film do what he did? The fact is: the answer is deliberately obscured. While is think he might be a

that's just a guess. Scott has designed to film just so viewers don't have these answers, and need to imagine what the answers might be. The film is designed to be open to interpretation regarding the motives of the non-human characters.

I think that fact would be more obvious if the motives of the human characters wasn't plain stupidity.

I think you're right on the fact that the stupidity of the actual crew is so in-your-face that it obscures some of the actual good things going on.

I hadn't caught that this was a different planet than in Alien. So that helps explain some inconsistencies.

I don't have a problem with movies that leave questions unanswered. The problem here is that Prometheus leaves every question unanswered.

It asked 100 questions and answers about 5. The balance is off.

If the rest of the movie had been better, or the characters more likable, or believable, or the story more focused... I might be able to excuse the complete lack of answers... but in the context of this movie, it was just annoying.

You sure it was another planet? I watched Alien and Aliens in the last couple days and it seems to be the same planetoid

I don't think anything in the movie is supposed to directly tie into Alien. I think the ship in Alien is another ship, with a slightly different type of bio weapon that went wrong. Obviously they were screwing around with stuff that can make something like the creature in Alien.

Given the quality of the writing, I have no faith that it's anything as complicated as that. The most likely answer is that they got the name of the planet wrong because they're a bunch of f*cktards. Also, I'm done using the Spoiler tag. Someone just amend the title of the thread with [MAJOR SPOILERS]
