How do I make Word my default app.

Hello all,
I have an online database which I have to frequently use to create a doc from. On my pc I simply click the doc, and it will automatically open the doc in Word. However, on my MacAir when I click the doc on the web page, it opens in Textedit. How do I make it so all docs open in Word, of course especially the docs from the web.

For online files, in Firefox under Preferences > Applications, there is a setting for "Microsoft Word.app Documents". Set that to Word. That should make any .doc downloaded via FF open in Word.
I can't find anything similar in Safari. Maybe Safari cribs off the OSX application bindings for non-browser files? So, make sure the application binding for Word files is MS Word, and not TextEdit.

You can also define system wide what app to use to open a particular file type.
Just select a .doc file, right click and select "Get Info" and under Open With use the drop down to select the application you want to use to open files of that type. And then click the "change all" button to make that choice apply to all documents of that type.
You may have to do it a couple times if you get both .doc and .docx files coming through. Not sure if OS X manages those two document type preferences separately or not due to the different file extension.

Does Firefox respect the system default set in the Finder's Get Info box?
If not, that's another excellent reason to ditch FF.

Under FF prefs I didn't see anything to do with Word - mostly itunes/quicktime. However, right click to get info on the text doc I produced from my online generated doc and switching to Word always worked fine. Thanks to all. Now if I could get it all on 3(instead on the 3+) pages as my pc would I would be set.
I love the new MacAir, but this conversion is not so simple.

The number of pages is based on the differences in font sizes between Macs and Windows (12pt on Mac Times New Roman does not equal the same 12pt Times New Roman on Windows). My wife runs into that issue all the time on her extensively formatted spreadsheets. Unfortunately, not a whole lot you can do other than reduce the size of the font (go from 12 to 10, for example) so it doesn't expand past 3 pages.
