it's been almost two years since our last dog passed away, and we decided it's time for another.

he's a six month old german shepherd mix we adopted from an animal rescue foundation. his name is "chance." (not house trained yet )

It's been quite a few years since I've had a dog. My last dog lived to be 17 years old but I've since moved into a condo and a dog is just not practical.

I do have 4 rescued cats though. Quite a different experience that having dogs. Much easier to care for. That's one good things about kitties.

my wife is partial to the floppy ears too. i just like german shepherds. was a little surprised at all the paperwork, references, interviews, and home visit involved with the pet adoption - but it went smoothly, just time consuming.

Rescue organizations want to make sure they won't have to take a dog back. Or even "re-rescue" one-which has happened... They want to be double sure you're serious and know what you're getting into, since a lot of "surrendered" dogs were bought on purpose, but the buyers "didn't know he'd get so big!" Or other foolishness.

Congrats on a really sweet looking dog.

WHAAAT??? I cat-sitted over spring break, and those things were a pain in the butt. Between all the pissing, pooping, barfing, hairballing, scratching, etc, I nearly killed myself. Dogs are so much easier.

To the OP, congrats on the beautiful pup. I love the name Chance by the way. Seems like a great name for a rescued dog (my rescue boxer is named Speaker when I got him )

You've got the wrong cats. Ours look after themselves, more or less. All they need is food and the occasional cleanup of the litter tray. They don't scratch because they've got trees to climb, they don't barf because they've got a healthy diet and they don't hairball because they're not neurotic.

Still, I am lobbying heavily for a dog but have been told that the baby needs a year or so of my undivided attention first. And OP, that's a cute puppy you've got here. Rescue dogs are the best dogs, in my experience. They know that life can be shit, so they want to make sure that life stays good.

Cats are usually waaaaaaaay easier to take care of then dogs. Dogs have, in general, a more lovable personality but I almost prefer the superior indifference cats have.

I have a cat that acts like a puppy, running to the door when I come in and everything. I've had dogs that were the only canine in a household full of cats and they were pretty aloof themselves. I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room, his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time. . . .
