Just saw that. Sad news indeed. Not a big baseball fan, although I was in my youth. I had the great pleasure of meeting him in 1997, when I sold him an HP computer. One of the nicest, most gentle, and humble people I've ever met, and widely regarded and admired!

He had someone with him, who advised him, and basically told him what to buy.

Ernie was such a presence, such a personality, that he made baseball for me. That relaxed drawl of his, that could get excited without getting hyper, made baseball on TV worth watching. I can hear his voice still, mentioning Kaline doing something amazing from right field, or reflecting how well Denny McLain had just fanned a batter...

Same here. I can still hear his voice clearly in my mind.

So what about the push to rename Comerica Park "Ernie Harwell Field at Comerica Park" or something similar? How could you NOT recognize Ernie in some majorly public way?

There is a statue of Ernie in a concourse at the CoPa and the press box/media area was renamed "The Ernie Harwell Communications Center" last year.
Also, his body will be lying in state at Comerica Park for all to pay their respects.
I was fortunate enough to shake his hand once.

to reiterate (as i'm there all the time; season ticket holder) scottiB's post:
ernie's name is on the wall of names in the outfield
they erected a statue of him inside the main gates
they renamed the press box/broadcast row after him
also, ernie mentioned to not only the Illitch's but publicly, he does NOT want the park to be named after him. so no, the park name shouldn't be changed. however, i wrote on another forum...
"...i can see "ernie harwell way or avenue" along either the site of old tiger stadium (renaming cochrane; cause you just can't touch michigan and trumbull) or at comerica (renaming that section of witherell in front of the stadium). that would be fitting and still respect his wishes (no stadium naming)."

That's what I get for being a Motown expat...I don't get all the details, particularly Ernie's wishes. I like the "Ernie Harwell Communications Center" thing a lot, and either renaming Cochrane or Witherell (the blocks where the stadium used to be or where Comerica is now) sounds good too.

In 1948, Harwell became the only announcer in baseball history to be traded for a player when the Brooklyn Dodgers' general manager, Branch Rickey, traded catcher Cliff Dapper to the Crackers in exchange for breaking Harwell's broadcasting contract. (Harwell was brought to Brooklyn to substitute for regular Dodger announcer Red Barber, who was hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer.)
