From their list of updates to v. 6.1:

Following discussions with Apple, this version will no longer allow customers to create audio CDs, audio DVDs, or export audio to their hard drive using purchased iTunes music store content.
This is bullshit. I paid for the damn songs; I should be able to do what I damn well please with them. For Apple to treat their users like pirates and force them to strictly use iTunes to burn m4p files is a slap in the face to their loyal customers.

6.09 has been working fine for my basic needs in Tiger, so I see no reason to update. As for iTMS? They just lost a customer.

I'd like to see them come break down my door for burning my m4p files through Toast.

I don't get it - what's so bad about using iTunes for burning?

I could swear that in a previous Toast version you couldn't burn purchased music, either. I know it happened to me probably two years ago -- shortly after the debut of the music store.

I'm a little cranky over this. As one of the earlier posters put it, I bought the songs, let me burn them how I want. With three girls using the store, plus myself, we patronize the music store quite a bit, as a matter of fact.

I'm under the impression that the older Toast version still works in Tiger, right? So I guess I just won't upgrade.

On topic: If you think you have the right to have de-DRMed music (which is against a possibly unconstitutional law, the DMCA), tools exist on the Internet for you to practice non-public, "at-home" civil diobedience. Jon is our friend.

Better not upgrade to QuickTime 7.0. With that installed Toast 6.0.9 not longer supports burning audio CDs from iTMS songs now. Dang it. And DiskBlaze only burns blank CDs of iTMS files now.

In general, nothing. At least for me. But iTunes doesn't give me the options Toast or DiskBlaze do. That's why I generally don't use iTunes for burning audio CDs.

I'd like to have a choice in where I burn my music. iTunes does not support CD-TEXT. Nor does it support hybrid audio CDs.

How does Apple expect us to backup our purchased music now? Only on an external?

(Oh yeah, I never bought any iTunes music either, but I do have about 20 of the weekly freebies.)

6.0.9 won't function forever on all future releases of the OS.

Burn your songs to an audio CD format through iTunes (which is perfectly legal). Then rip them as MP3s (still legal). Violá! DRM is gone and the song you paid for is backed up and portable-and all legal.

As I stated in the other thread, I do not buy music from iTunes because not only is their DRM very restrictive of legal uses of the music I might buy, but the music format they use is not supported by a wide enough range of players to give me the flexibility I want. It's just to restrictive overall.

I'm still at 6.0.0 since I haven't had any problems with it.

Heh, I just fired up an old copy of Toast 5.2.3. It still works in Tiger.

Yes, but will it work on 10.8?

Of course, that's 6-8 years away, and a lot can happen in that time...
