1) A German company got this contract. Worth noting, because of the previous stance that companies based in countries which didn't lend support to the war shouldn't get contracts for rebuilding.

2) GSM beat the superior CDMA in what was essentially a marketing war.

Skilled people are all over the planet, why should the contract be worth nothing?
the US know about it, don't they?
US is also very keen on different nations services.

For practical reasons,- distance of natural resources, -industries factories ..... plus the difficulty to bring the material from US, it's in everyone's interest to work together, and share contracts.
BTW, Who is CDMA
(throughout whole history of mankind, invaders had problems keeping up with supervision and logistics when the center of command was far: Persians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, French, German, Russian, and so on.
oos
The urban border zones have often mixed cultures and religions.

I guess in a Mac forum, it's a bit ironic to raise this argument, but technically superior is not always better.

To quote ZDNet:
"As you'd expect from a standard around ten years younger, CDMA has some technological advantages over GSM. You can cram more calls into the same chunk of spectrum, it's more resistant to noise and it handles congestion better. If there were no mobile phones on the planet and there was a competition on purely technical merit, CDMA would most likely win. But there are, there isn't, and it won't.

CDMA has around 12 percent of the global market, GSM nearly 70. This has certain implications: there are many more models of GSM phones than there are CDMA, and the best features appear on GSM first (and sometimes stay there). Every country in Europe and the Middle East is on GSM, and roaming between operators and countries is a fact of life. Take a GSM phone to America, and you have a good chance of it working. Try doing it in reverse with CDMA. [AFAIK, you can only roam in 2 countries with CDMA, as opposed to 140 countries with GSM.]

If the main purpose of the reconstruction of Iraq is to give the country a firm footing in reality and to equip it for life among the modern nations, then the purpose of its mobile phone network must be to let as many people communicate as cheaply as possible and with as few restrictions and as many benefits as possible. This must include roaming with its neighbours, exposure to the benefits of the best and liveliest market in both infrastructure and handsets, and the chance for indigenous skills to develop with the best chance of being useful in the world outside. On all these fronts, you can't knock GSM."

GSM has doubled its share of the US market since 2002). I don't think it's just marketing. I think overall GSM is better even if technically slightly behind. At the same time, people shouldn't see CDMA as American and GSM as European. Firms from both countries contribute to both technologies and American companies are more than capable of implementing a GSM network.

Erhm.

"Worth noting, not "worth nothing".

That sort of changes the meaning of the post you're ranting about.
