Recently went to the eye doc to inquire about multi-focal contacts for my aging eyes. Astigmatism prevents me from getting the multi-focals but my doc suggested monovision correction. One eye for reading, the other for distance. It's been over two weeks now and I'm just not thrilled with it. Neither distance nor close-up is clear... always seems a tad fuzzy. I constantly have the sensation that something is in my eye (like when you wake up in the morning and you've got goop in your eye).

Anyone else have this? What's your experience. You ever get fully accustomed to it?

I'm assured that I will get used to it... but it's been over two weeks now and I'm still adjusting. Just wondering what other's experience is.

I can't speak on it specifically, but this sort of thing goes beyond "annoying" with me. I flip the **** out when my eyes give me signals with too wide a variance.

Someone recommended a trick where if you get up at night to use the bathroom, close one eye so it maintains adjustment to the dark.

Only tried that once. My brain beachballed.

Stupid question: Can you get contacts for seeing, and have a pair of glasses you can throw on for reading. I realize you're trying to go glasses-less, but that compromise has to be better than this monovision bullshit, right?

For me the whole point was to get rid of glasses. I truly hate having glasses on my face and invariably remove them as often as I can. (Even though I live in the tropics, I hardly ever wear sunglasses.) Additionally, I can't see the computer screen when my vision is corrected for distance and I spend 10 hours a day in front of a computer. At this point I'm going to give it some more time and see if I can get used to it. I reached out to my coworkers and have discovered this is more common than I thought. Quite a few folks in their 50's - 60's have had monovision done permanently with Lasik. They all swear by it.

So it's been about a month now and I have to say I'm about 95% accustomed to the monovision thing. I suspect another few weeks and I won't even notice. The only drawback is that I've had to move my computer screens a little closer because at about 2 feet away (which is where I usually kept them) it's beyond the focal point of my near-vision eye and too close for my distance-vision eye.

My father is having cataract surgery this month and I'm recommending he have them correct his vision in this same manner. Several years ago he did the lasik thing which completely ruined his close-up vision and he always regretted it. They had corrected both eyes for distance vision. I think this will be the best of both worlds for him.

I just spent over 800 bucks for progressive trifocals so I can now see clearly again. I'd rather see and wear glasses, that not see. I used to be a museum quality model maker and I couldn't even see some of my work these last 5 years.

I am near-sighted in one eye, and far-sighted in the other. And I have floaters. beats not being able to see, though.
But if I read for more than a few hours without the glasses It's like my head is being ripped apart in two different directions.
